AL vs NL question

A lot of times you hear people (announcers, etc) talk about how pitching is different in the AL versus the NL. They talk about how when a pitcher gets behind or is in a full count, in the NL you get a lot of fastballs but in the AL because of the DH you see mostly offspeed and breaking stuff.

Why is this? I tend to think I know a good bit about baseball but can't seem to figure why the DH (who isn't necessarily hitting at the time) could affect what kind of pitches are thrown in certain counts...:smoking:
