Hint: He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time All-American Offensive Lineman. Also, the first black man to be on the cover of SI

The 6-foot, 220-pounder was chosen by the Detroit Lions in the NFL's 1956 college draft, but he chose to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. He was killed in a plane crash while returning from the CFL's All-Star game after his rookie season.

no wonder I have never heard of him

One more hint, he was the Outland Trophy Winner of 1955 and member of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Yep, thats a winner.

Other interesting tidbits:

Iowa and Wisconsin combined for 32 fumbles in their 1925 meeting that Iowa lost 6-0.

Iowa holds the NCAA record for fewest fans at a home game with 0. In 1918 against Coe College the influenza epidemic caused the War Department to ban attendance at the game.

</CENTER>Iowa guard Calvin Jones appeared on the Sept. 27, 1954, cover. "There's a stone wall waiting in Iowa to crack the skulls of the Notre Dame backfield," we wrote of our first college football cover subject, "and the keystone in it is a six-foot, 210-pound guard named Calvin Jones." <!--========== /CONTENT ===========-->

If not mistaken, the only numbers ever retired at IOWA are of JONES and Nile KINNICK.

And thats why they play the game.

Ironically, the Hawkeyes Nile Kinnick was also killed in a plane crash in the World War.
