Here is the problem the NFL has right now. They don't know what to do with all these new WR's that have over 10,000 yards and 800 catches. The fact is quite a few guys have retired with these stats as of late and the committee hasn't figured out what to do with these guys yet. Before the last 15 years, if you had 10,000 receving yards you were a lock to get in the HOF.
Now look at the list of WR's with over 10,000 yards that aren't in the HOF that have recently retired:
2. T Brown 14934
4. C Carter 13899
5. H Ellard 13777
6. A Reed 13198
8. I Fryar 12785
9. A Monk 12721
11. J Smith 12287
14. M Irvin 11904
17. G Clark 10856
18. S Morgan 10716
21. H Jackson 10372
23. A Rison 10205
25. S Sharpe 10060
Now these are the current athletes that have over 10,000 yards receiving:
10. *M Harrison 12331
12. *I Bruce 12278
16. *R Smith 10877
19. *K McCardell 10680
20. *T Owens 10535
24. *R Moss 10147
And add to this the fact that Holt, Keyshawn, and Moulds will all probably get 10,000 yards receiving this year. The HOF Committee doesn't know what to do. Hell, 8,000 yards was pretty much the point WR's needed to make just 20 years ago and now look at all the guys over that. Going to be interesting to see what the HOF voters do.
Also, this same problem we are going to see happen in 5-6 years with running backs. Just 10 years ago, only one RB with over 10,000 rushing yards was not in the HOF (Ottis Anderson). Now look at all the RB's that are gonna put up those stats: Martin, Bettis, Dillon, George, Faulk, Watters. And you also have Edge, Dunn, Freddie Taylor, and Tiki all closing in on 10,000 as well.
