Wouldn't it be more fair if overtimes didn't count for wagers?

Just seems like when you have the favorite, and they cover in overtime, you feel guilty. When you have the dog, you're pissed.

I happen to agree with this. When betting soccer, overtime does not count unless you bet the line which includes overtime.

There is nothing worse than losing a correctly handicapped under because of overtime. Or a 4 point dog in football where the other team breaks a long run off and wins (sd vs wash last year).

I really do agree that OT should not be part of the bet.

I agree. I think it is totally unfair when overtimes count on wagers. You could cap a game perfect and make the right plays on the side and total only to lose both bets because of the overtime. I only wish this would change but it won't.

I once had a bookie who I beat twice in one week betting over's in baskets. He then changed the rules and he said OT's don't count towards the final score. The following week I beat him twice betting under when the games went into OT and the games went over. At that point he didn't know what to do, so he wouldn't put out totals for me at all!!!

5dimes used to have hockey totals for the 1st 3 periods excluding OT. I don't know if they still do that.

Overtime is factored into the line, yes. If OT didn't count for wagers, totals would be a bit lower.

I dont think this can possibly be the case. Take basketball for example. If the totals are raised a little bit for OT, say a couple of points - that would serve no purpose. The books would get a little bit more action on the under, but in theory it does not compensate for OT at all because OT is worth about 20 points.

If it goes to OT, 90% of games go over. I dont think the books take OT in to linemaking one iota because I dont think handicappers do either. And also I dont know how they could effectively eliminate the OT dilemma - being that OT adds 20 points to a total.

Im not sure about all of this but it is an interesting discussion - and one I would like to hear other opinions on.

I don't know about that but I've always thought that teams should get extra timeouts and each player should get 1 extra foul in NBA when it goes to overtime...

I just hate when you have a dog that plays well all game and the fav. miraculously sends it into OT and has a chance to cover...they don't always come all of the way back, but waiting the 2 mins.-5 mins. (depending on whether it's college hoops or college football) between the end of regulation and overtime, I am an absolute wreck...

Overtime in the NBA is common enough that if it wasn't factored into the line, you could blindly bet overs and show a profit, but this isn't the case.

i agree, overtime sucks. Especially in college football when you cap a game under and lose it after 3 overtimes.

You can always bet 1st half and Q3,Q4. I bet NBA H2 over ( knowing OT) wins it, and Q3 and/or Q4 under if I like under, then OT only helps my over bets. I won't bet a whole NBA under.

I think it should count towards sides, but not totals. If they go 4 qaurters and stay under the number you bet then you did your job right and OT feels like a hose job. But with the side, you're betting that they will cover their spread. If they just need more time to decide the game then you didn't really get screwed.

Does anyone know on average how many games actually go into OT?

I think it's a little less than 10%, maybe 8%, I used to know, but forgot.
