On July 16, 1918, the Bosox and the St. Louis Browns were tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth.

With a runner on first, BABE RUTH hit the ball out of the park to win the game.

However, in those days, the game was declared over when the winning run scored, therefore Ruth was credited with only a triple and not a home run.

:ughhh:

Were he and others later credited with homers in the record history books for their non-solo walkoff homers?????

Babe had only 20 homers going into his 5th season (age 24) because he was primarily a pitcher full time.

JMAN--Do you know if MLB ever adjusted the record books and credited the players with a HOMER that hit a game winning homer such as Ruth did in this example?

If they did i would guess Robin Ventura would have been credited with a Grand Slam in the 2000 playoffs..

Oh man, that's a low blow. I love it. That's hilarious, just because it's Wil.

I don't they go backwards, very early records are probably not to be trusted, stuff from the 1890-s and earlier, however early it goes back.

Doubt they go back and "change" things like that; the records stand as they were under the rules of the day.

Lot of ballparks back then didn't have an outfield wall-- ya had to hit it far and/or sprint for your homer.

...and he also played in an era where latino & black athletes were outlawed from playing. Something that doesnt seem to be discussed as well.

Some consider Ruth to have been black, or mixed race. He was clearly the best HR hitter of his time.

That's not right. He didn't get credited for a HR because his teammates mobbed him at second. He just never finished rounding the bases. That's why the double.

no they never went back and gave them homers
He never played in a major league park with no fences.
ruth also lost something like 14 homers ( i forget the exact ammount but baseball weekly did a piece on it a few years back) because early in his career if you hit a homerun but landed in foul terrotory it was foul.

There was also a portion in his career where if you hit a ball that bounced over the fence it was a homer ( in that same baseball weekly piece it said they were fasirly certain he never hit one like this.)

His fat ass was happy it was scored that way so he didn't have to circle the bases.

Why on ESPN are they mentioning how bad pitching is
these days in baseball??? Were there 30 teams in
baseball in 1921?

Homeruns also counted if they bounced over the wall in some ballparks(through 1930). How many "ground rule" homers did Babe have?
