#1 I had enormous potential, was drafted by Oakland but chose college instead, I was drafted again as a 1st rd pick 3 years later.

I could not stay healthy, I protected a two time MVP in our lineup...I missed over 500 games due to injury before retiring.

Two time MVP in "old" NL East = Dale Murphy?

I'll say Bob Horner...

I figured that clue would seal it...Bob Horner it is!

Horner was 2nd in the NL in homers in 1980 and he missed 38 games....he would get out of his car and get hurt.

Its not Bob Horner. Horner hit a whole lot more than 98 homers. He did not play in the old east either. He played in the old west.

Read the question again

I hit 90 homers by age 22.

However you were right about the old east part

Oh, 98 homers by 22. Missed that one.

He played in the old west. The Braves used to play in the west when they are about as east coast as you can get.
