OT: Andy Griffith show ?

Marathon been on all weekend. A thought occured to me. I must have seen every show. I never recall hearing any explanation why Andy is a single father.

What happened to Opie's mom/ Andy's wife ?

died before 1st episode....think goobers twin long lost twin brother came to Mayberry to kill Andy. Barney mistakenly shot Andys wife with his one bullet.

Andy forgave him after a night on the porch with a guitar and some apple pie.

The show operated on at least two levels: there were the corny, nitwit antics of the supporting players, who provided most of the humor, and there was also the straightforward presentation of the occasional story involving a criminal to be caught or a love interest to be established. There was often a storyline of a serious nature concerning Andy's being a single parent to Opie. (The series never explained the circumstances surrounding Andy's wife, though she is mentioned in the episode "A Wife for Andy".)

Where was Mayberry ? I always kinda thunk NC, they went to Calif in one of the later new fangled color espisodes on the marathon, said 3,000 miles, about right.

Andy Griffith had a torrid romance with Frances Bavier who played Aunt Bee. The relationship ended badly. Bavier moved to NC hoping Griffith would return home. He never did. When she died Griffith did not attand her funeral saying there was no need to reopen old wounds.

I believe the location was mythical and Mayberry, NC doesn't exist, seems like it should be around there, I always thought of Mayberry being in NC for some reason. 3,000 miles from Calif supports that theory.
