May Have Caused Injury

</big>[SIZE=-1](Thursday, June 1) While Barbaro's was a model patient at New Bolton Center more than a weak after his career ending and life threatening injury in the Preakness Stakes, Lou Raffetto Jr., the president and chief executive officer of the Maryland Jockey Club says Brother Derek may have been the cause of the injury.

</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <small style="font-family: tahoma;">Raffetto told Dick Jerardi of the Philadelphia Daily News that he has looked over video and still photography and has come to the conclusion that Brother Derek's right front foot hit Barbaro's right hind foot about 200 yards into the race and the contact might have caused the injuries to the Kentucky Derby winner.

"If you see the tape, you'll see just before they come to the shadow of the building (around the sixteenth pole, 200 yards into the race) and I have some stills too that show this, let's say (Barbaro) is in the three path, he's inside of Sweetnorthernsaint," Raffetto told the Daily News on Monday. "Within like two jumps, (Barbaro) is right behind Sweetnorthernsaint. And you can see this on the head-on."

"Simultaneously, as he moves behind Sweetnorthernsaint, Brother Derek is catching up to the field. And it appears as Barbaro drifts, Brother Derek strides out with his right front just as Barbaro extends his right hind.

"The way we know this is in the footage and we looked at it frame by frame, you can see just as they appear to make contact where there is the full extension, Barbaro's head goes up in the air. At the same time (Brother Derek's jockey Alex) Solis, you see his right shoulder go out. He's pulling him off. The still I have shows (Solis) doing it."

"It appears (Brother Derek) hit (Barbaro's) right hind as he was probably planting it. Instead of just planting it normally, it forced him to twist."

Raffetto sent a DVD of the finding to owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and also to trainer Michael Matz.

Matz told the Daily News, ""I got the tape and I just looked at it quickly. I guess anything is possible. There were no cuts in the skin. I don't know. No matter how it happened, it's a terrible loss."

Meanwhile at New Bolton, jockey Edgar Prado made his first visit to check up on Barbaro. “I was happy to see him doing so good, feeling so good, looking so bright,” said Prado after the visit. “He’s not out of the woods yet, but it was really good to see him.”

Chief of Surgery Dean W. Richardson said Barbaro "has had an incredibly good week, and is doing very well.”

A special horseshoe designed and patented by the Farrier Service at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine has been applied to Barbaro’s hoof. “One of the complications that can occur following leg fractures in horses is the risk of developing laminitis in the opposite foot from bearing extra weight,” said New Bolton Center farrier Rob Sigafoos. “To reduce this risk, we applied a supportive shoe to Barbaro's left hind foot immediately following the surgery for the fracture of his right hind leg.” </small>

Mr Raffeto,
It's horseracing and these things happen. Unfortunately it happened in the Preakness. Thanks for proving that you are in fact an even bigger asshole than your predecessor, Joe DeFrancis. That is quite an accomplishment. Perhaps you should now focus on your crumbling racing operation.

Kudos to Michael Matz for taking the high road.
