World Cup starting and I dont get it. I think its a sport you have to play or grow up with. I watched the big game final that was in Paris a few weeks ago with Ronny Dio as star or something and there is more excitement in one minute of NBA vs whole game of soccer. One score makes an exciting game?? Typical goals under 5? WTF?

I totally agree about soccer.

Shaking my head at your post. I know soccer isn't for anyone but maybe it isn't the world that is wrong maybe its you? The only thing I agree with is the you have to grow up part since that helps. Soccer fans identify themselves to there local teams or countries much like you to Iowa and unlike watching Iowa football/basketball where there is always next year to choke again during the World Cup its once every four years so one little mistake and it can be doom and there are no guarenttes that a team will even make it back. That is drama and something that can't be summed in merely goals or lack there off since there is so much more to the game then that.

Its a different kind of game. You can look at the NBA and say oh there's a made jumper - haven't seen that in 25 seconds. Oh there's another 3 pointer YAWN

In soccer every goal scored is HUGE. One mis-step by a defender could lead to a goal and a loss. In basketball a defender slips and it leads to a 2 point bucket and it isn't thought about again. The way they control the ball and move it around the field is amazing. it really is the beautiful game

I would rate soccer as right there with baseball and basketball as 2nd tier sports behind the god of all sports that is american football. I used to not be high on soccer either until I watched a bunch of world cup matches in '94.

Soccer is one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet. I play for kicks every now and again (I suck) and am in awe of how these guys can run up and down that huge field like that, and still retain their fancy footwork.

I'm LOVING that it's World Cup time again! (Go ENGLAND!)

I can't stand NBA personally

It's one end score, other end score, repeat 45 times. Last 30 seconds of the game is the only thing interesting.

Strangely I do find college hoops watchable though, not sure why..

It's just like hockey. I don't understand the rules. The puck moves too fast sometimes for me to follow. It's hard to tell if someone scored. So I don't like it.

So I think understanding the sport by either watching it on a regular basis or playing it growing up really helps. You might think "man it's boring to have them only score 2 goals in the game." But us soccer lovers love to see the skill, the build up to scoring chances, and knowing that one mistake in the World Cup could cost your team.

Hey baseball is just slower than soccer. So much waiting time between pitches. But people understand the game here so that's why it's so popular. Some would say football is boring because you have a play that lasts only a few seconds, then they huddle up again, and do that the whole game. But damn we love that sport here.

In soccer, the ball is always moving around.

I agree. I've been watching more of the NBA playoffs but a regular season game is rather mundane until the final few minutes. Yeah there's a lot of scoring but it's so easy to score somtimes that it's not all that exciting.

Soccer is popular because it's a cheap, simple game to play.(in terms of rules)!!! It has the least amount of action however, based on the fact that the game only needs one ref (and two linesmen) for twenty two players! Also most sports have a set time limit, and tenth of a seconds are counted, because of the fast paced action. Soccer doesn't need to count down to tenth of seconds, because the action is slow. Also time limit varies to referee discretion (stoppage time). This would never happen in a fast paced, action filled north american sports!

Put some decent sized bets an the matches, that usually helps with the excitement. :drink:

the world cup final will have 3 times more viewers worldwide than any superbowl and last world cup had approx 40 billion viewers during the tournament so I think it is you americans that don't get it just the same way as most non americans think that.

1 - American Football is a stop start padded up softy version of rugby.
2 - Basketball is 2 teams of freaks running up and down up a gym scoring one shot after another.
3 - MLB is an even slower version of cricket where the players are too soft to catch a ball without gloves.
4 - Hockey is 5 a side soccer (football) on ice where no one can see the ball and its any excuse to pound someone.

Not saying one way is right over the other but a lot of US sport just turns non-americans cold the same way soccer can to the uninitiated.

Seriously, these arguments are always filled with cultural pride & chauvinism. I don't particularly enjoy American sports (foots/hoops/bases), but I've watched some great games in all of them and I'm sure they would grow on me if I watched more.

No need to bash foreign sports.

Except womens sumo wrestling. Good God. :smoking:

Soccer & Hockey are great sports to watch...some of the most exciting games are these matches.

Game 7 in a hockey match has to be the most exciting game to watch ....JMO

Opposable thumbs is what separates us from the apes. Why would anyone devise a game that eliminates the use of the greatest evolutionary advantage of humans? And why would anyone else watch it?

Never could get into organized kickball. Not saying the game sucks or is not a sport, I just never played it and don't appreciate it fully I guess. In fact if they gave me free beer and played in my front yard I wouldn't watch it.

I have grown to like/tolerate soccer over the years when I thought I never could. As a matter of fact my favorite game right now is FIFA Soccer 2006 (I know some of you suggested Winning 11 but I didn't like it LOL). I pretty much watch the game when the stakes are high like the UEFA semifinals and finals but I give it more of a chance than I use to.

JM - Because it's called FOOTBALL - duh?????? not like the american one where they hardly use the feet yet they call it football.

So I guess your favourite game is Handball? - if you want a sport that turns you cold there it is.
