If you check out the repeats of that show 30 days (hosted by that Spurlock guy of "Supersize Me" fame) - there's an episode where 2 people from NYC go live on what I recall is essentially a hippie commune. They had a bio diesel vehicle and while it looked like a hassle, it was still pretty damn impressive.
