You guys should be hearing of this a little later, just breaking the news.

Apparently a group of US teenagers here in Costa Rica were on some kind of small craft in the sea at night and the thing flipped over. One dead so far, apparently a second body has just been recovered and several other are missing.

Channel 7 is showing images right now of the rescue/recovery effort but the waves are huge and just lifted a boat straight up in the air and seconds later overturned it. This off the coast of Palo Seco.

I'll update as more news comes in.

The Ocean does not care what kind of boat you have. And it is most powerful, and unforgiving. I feel for the families of the kids. Sounds like some kind of HS graduation trip. My Daughter just got back from SoCal. Brought me back a cool pirate shirt. In my Navy days I saw some unbeleivable oceans, no I did not see it, I lived it. Cruising on the surface in a sea state of 7, in the dark, in the Straights of Juan De Fuego. But out of respect for the situation I will save that story for another time.

Tourists, and those used to lake conditions have no idea how deadly yhe ocean can be. Even on a calm day a sleeper can nail you. And the waves, tides, currents even weather can change instantly. A lot safer making sand castles and volcano hiking. Who will they blame?

A prayer for the families and loved ones...

Best Wishes...OF :howdy: :cryingcry

Two Kansas teens drown in Costa Rica
Student, teacher remain missing

Monday, June 12, 2006; Posted: 9:46 a.m. EDT (13:46 GMT)

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) -- Two Kansas teenagers died and two other Americans were missing after they were swept away by currents while swimming at a Pacific Coast beach in Costa Rica, authorities said.

Officials said they were searching for the two swimmers missing since Saturday, identified as a teacher and a student from Labette County High School in Altamont, Kansas.

"We are carrying out air and sea searches for the missing," Red Cross shift supervisor Alexander Morales said Sunday.

The body of Danielle Tongier, 18, who graduated from the school last year, was found Saturday, according to school authorities and Costa Rican officials.

Searchers on Sunday recovered the body of Andrew Harpstrite, a 17-year-old junior at Labette, said Red Cross guard chief Carlos Bolanos.

The two teens, along with junior Jessica Pierce, 17, apparently got in trouble while swimming off Palo Seco beach, near the town of Parrita, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) south of the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.

Brett Carlson, who taught Spanish at the school, reportedly jumped in to try to save them. Pierce and Carlson still were missing Sunday evening.

Labette County school Superintendent Dennis Wilson said that 10 students, Carlson and another chaperone had been in Costa Rica since June 6, and students saved money all year for the language and arts trip.

"It was kind of a highlight for those who were in Spanish II classes," Wilson said.

"Mr. Carlson was a very popular and well-liked teacher," he said. "We'll have counselors available this week at the school for students who want to come up and talk to people."

The group had been scheduled to return June 14.

Dominical was the worst for me. My girlfriend almost died back in 2000. we were using boogie boards on some small waves. suddenly she gets pulled out30 feet and the waves got huge and were overlaping. One would hit you, push you under and after tumbling and making it to the surface, you got hit again.

I was forced to make it out to her to attempt to calm her and hopefully find a wave that we could ride in. With luck, we did.

Unless the water is super calm, I will not enter above my knees.

I wish the outcome were different. Senior trips should be fun, this was a shame.
