Reason: We'll gladly take the insurance run at this price with the Cubs on Sunday afternoon. Series victories have been few and far between for Chicago, but this is an excellent opportunity for them to do so against a suddenly struggling Reds squad.
Rookie Carlos Marmol gets the call for the visiting Cubs. He has been spectacular in two relief appearances, striking out six in four innings of work, while holding his opponents scoreless. You can be sure he'll relish the opportunity to get the start on Sunday. The much touted rookie should have some success against a Reds lineup that has lacked the killer instinct in this series.
Reds starter Eric Milton has looked good since returning from the DL, but we're not buying in just yet. He has struggled against the Cubs throughout his career, posting a 5.79 ERA. While he did get the better of them back on May 31st in Chicago, I look for a different scenario to play out on Sunday. The Cubs have been swinging the bats much better of late, and should give him a stiffer challenge this time around.
We're getting solid value with Carlos Marmol and the Cubs on the run line Sunday afternoon. This should be a tightly contested ball game, but don't be surprised if the Cubs pull out the victory. Take Chicago +1.5.

Peavy has been bothered by some tendenitis in his shoulder and hasn't been his dominant self recently. However, all reports are that he's 'good to go' and I expect him to bounce back with a strong outing as the Padres avenge yesterday's loss vs. the lowly Marlins. Peavy has an excellent 2.36 ERA vs. the Marlins with a 1.087 ERA. Meanwhile, Moehler goes for the Marlins and he is 0-1 with a poor 5.56 ERA in two starts vs. San Diego. Unfortunately, for Florida fans, those stats actually look good when compared to Moehler's road numbers this season. In six road starts Moehller has a horrid 8.59 ERA and an awful 2.012 WHIP. He's lasted just shy of 30 innings (less than five innings per start) and has allowed 30 runs (28 earned), 48 hits (6 HRs) and has allowed more walks (11) than strikeouts (Cool. Despite yesterday's loss, the Padres remain a solid 4-1 the last five times they hosted the Marlins. They are also 7-2 on Sundays this season while the Marlins are 2-7 in Sunday games this season. At 2:10pm our selection is on the Minnesota Twins over the Baltimore Orioles. One of the hopes the Orioles had when they signed Atlanta's legendary pitching coach, Leo Mazzone, during the offseason was that he could help a couple of young, very talented but erratic pitchers named Daniel Cabrera and Erik Bedard. Despite showing some moments of brilliance, Cabrera still walks too many batters, and Bedard, after a promising but injury filled campaign in 2005 has just been plain awful. It is said that the talented lefthander from Canada (Bedard) doesn't listen well to his coaches and that has to wear thin on a veteran teacher like Mazzone. In contrast, a young and talented lefthander who not only listens to what he is taught but also does just about everything else extremely well is Twins starter Francisco Liriano. The Twins must be liking their chances in 2007 with Johan Santana and young players like Liriano, first baseman Justin Morneau, and catcher Joe Mauer. Liriano has been nothing short of sensational this year, first as a reliever, and then in the past 3 weeks as a member of the rotation. In his 4 starts since May 19, Liriano has given up a total of 4 earned runs in 22 innings, for an ERA of 1.64. Erik Bedard has an ERA of 5.84 but is much worse on the road with a 9.26 ERA away from Camden Yards. The Orioles are only hitting .221 as a team against lefties and at 9-17 have one of the worst road records of any team in the American League. Take the Twins. As always, good luck...Al McMordie. At 2:10pm our selection is on the Minnesota Twins over the Baltimore Orioles. One of the hopes the Orioles had when they signed Atlanta's legendary pitching coach, Leo Mazzone, during the offseason was that he could help a couple of young, very talented but erratic pitchers named Daniel Cabrera and Erik Bedard. Despite showing some moments of brilliance, Cabrera still walks too many batters, and Bedard, after a promising but injury filled campaign in 2005 has just been plain awful. It is said that the talented lefthander from Canada (Bedard) doesn't listen well to his coaches and that has to wear thin on a veteran teacher like Mazzone. In contrast, a young and talented lefthander who not only listens to what he is taught but also does just about everything else extremely well is Twins starter Francisco Liriano. The Twins must be liking their chances in 2007 with Johan Santana and young players like Liriano, first baseman Justin Morneau, and catcher Joe Mauer. Liriano has been nothing short of sensational this year, first as a reliever, and then in the past 3 weeks as a member of the rotation. In his 4 starts since May 19, Liriano has given up a total of 4 earned runs in 22 innings, for an ERA of 1.64. Erik Bedard has an ERA of 5.84 but is much worse on the road with a 9.26 ERA away from Camden Yards. The Orioles are only hitting .221 as a team against lefties and at 9-17 have one of the worst road records of any team in the American League. Take the Twins. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
