Why are Southerners better in sports?

I know this is a real generalization, but from what I have observed over time, the South per capita just has better athletes in every major sport compared to other regions of the country. I see that right now watching the college world series. Conferences like the SEC, ACC and Big 12 have more than their fair share of top 10 teams in every major collegiate sport, and even the minor sports, and that includes the fact teams from up north often raid the South for talent (esp in football).

Am I wrong to believe this? And if I am right, what is the reason? Is it the weather? The hot chicks? Or something cultural?

WEATHER, and Attitude

The weather is much more conducive to year round practice.

The attitude is much more serious also. No way in hell you'd see coaches suspended for outscoring opposing teams by more than 50 in the south.

As a result of better athletes, the competition is better, which puses everyone harder.

We here in the South are built for kickin ass.

:toast: well if that were true, the United States would have 35 states, wouldn't it?

Weather, do doubt. Here in Florida, kids play baseball and football all year round. My kids play little league 9 months a year, my brother's kids in Massachusetts play 3 months.

Did you ever see Southerners play hockey? They all drown in the wading pool.

1) Southerners DOMINATE soccer (SMU and Duke have two of the finest programs in ncaa) and most of the US soccer stars come from Texas or N/S Carolina.

2) A Southern hockey team (Carolina) is about to take the Stanley cup.

Whale, dunno that, but the point is the South is a mecca for soccer, and that includes fan and institutional support.

On the other hand, I also saw a recent ESPN piece about how powerful the h.s. soccer programs are in Texas, and how there is so much talent there, but no options for their kids to stay home since U.Texas, T.Tech, Tex A+M etc. cut their programs due to Title IX.

my other point is, South is also supporting hockey, given the strength of the Carolina Canes franchise. If they didn't care about a sport as alien as hockey, no way the franchise would be successful.
