If so, I hope it was mild. What's it feel like...what was the first inclination you had that something was wrong

Some early warning signs;

Chest pain or discomfort in the center of the chest; a “squeezing,” “heaviness” or “crushing” feeling that lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back
Pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body including the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
Sweating or “cold sweat”
Fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling (may feel like “heartburn”)
Nausea or vomiting
Light-headedness
Extreme weakness or anxiety
Rapid or irregular heart beats

The average heart beats 3 billion times in a lifetime, and 42 million times a year, amazing when you think about it .

The reason I ask...Day started like any other day. Did a little work, played with the kids...probably made a smart-ass post here. Went for a 5-mile run and felt great. I was taking a dump about two hours ago and I felt a sharp pain in my chest. Then I felt a little tightness...that freaked me out, I've never felt that before. It went away pretty quick but still...

So I finished business fast because I ain't going out like the King, and I drank a glass of water. No more pain, no nosea, no light-headedness, no irregular heart beats...

Time for a physical...heart disease is in my family. My dad was one of the first 100 people to have angioplasty in the 70's...he was in his early 40's at the time and in great shape.

If I go tonight...Rock on brothers and sisters! Go Beavs, and never bet a lot of money on a team QB'd by Jake Plummer....

More than likely it was nothing but you can never be too safe to get checked...how old are you?

You would be surprised to learn just how many minor aches and pains that seem serious and end up being nothing that the average person wll someday experience....the sharp pain could have been a muscle pain too, especially after running 5 miles , I'm not tring to belittle it, I freak out too at the slightest sign of anything....It could very easily have been a muscle ache though.

Aging absolutely blows!

Thanks fellas...I'm going to get checked out as soon as possible. Just turned 40 but I swear I'm not a day over 27. OK, that's a lie...if I dyed the gray out of my hair I could pass for 35 easy.

I think you are right J-man...I just worked out my chest friday so I do get cramps...but the tightness was something I never felt before.

Had a friend die at 34 from a heart attack, Father of two little girls...cross country runner...5-10, 140 lbs...not an ounce of fat on him and ran about 10 miles four or five times a week.....died while he was jogging.

WC, the ticker is nothing to mess with. Even if it's just a valve issue, it's a no brainer to get it checked out ASAP. Perfectly healthy looking athletes drop dead due to previously unknown genetic defects.

I'm not one to go to the doctor much, but if it's the ticker-it's worth looking into, and soon.

Athletes put a ton of strain on their hearts , heavy weightlifting can be detriment too in some cases, athletes can experience chest trouble they otherwise may not because the do so much vigorous exercise....also can have an enlarged heart which is also not good.

I wouldn't get too worried about it, I know how it is though when you have some weird sensation you've never experienced, I had an incident myself earlier ths spring where my heart went racing for about 5 minutes after biking, scared me good....

I've done a lot of reading about all this stuff and you would be surprised just how many people get these symptoms at some point, I'm sure you will be fine.

It does make you think though when you exercise after you experience one of these incidents, if you are pushing it too much.

Yes!!

As I`ve stated before I`m older than most here, so take that into consideration. Was in my late 50`s when I had mine. None of the symptoms described by J Man, altho he`s right that is the norm. Mine was a pain across my back up in the muscle that run across the top. Also felt like I was coming down w/the flu. One of the best cheap investments you can make is a BP cuff. A huge spike in mine triggered the HA. Luckily I`ve been a jock all my life and never smoked. Those 2 things helped. Also not overweight 6`1" 190. My biggest prob. is salt intake. An example, this wk I had 5 days straight of 120/72 just about perfect. Then I got a little careless for ONE day and it jumped to 145/89. Also cholesteral s/b under 200, mine is now 120. There are so many factors to think that only one i.e. "fatty" is pure nonsense. Please see a Dr. for a full blood workup & possible EKG. NOW!!!!! Remember Dr. James Fix. BOL to all you young studs, I was one once too.

WC, If you want to do a self test, run 3 miles if you do that without any pain your fine, if you have any pain at all getting your heart rate up, go immediately to the hosptial. I was having some pain in my chest a couple of years ago and scheduled a doctor's appointment. Ended up feeling better and ran the night before the appointment. As soon as I told him I ran he said you basically did your own stress test and it was probably just stress causing tightness in my chest.

Don't think my Doc thought I was too"bright" putting my heart under stress without seeing him first, but at least I knew the answer.

LOL!! As a self-test, run three miles? LOL!! Oh my goodness.

You forgot the best part, jwunderdog:

"If you find yourself lying on the ground with your vision turning to black then you know you probably needed some help. Better luck next time around."

jwunder, I know you are smarter than that. You are making a joke, right? Right? tulsa
