A family court judge in Reno, Nevada, was shot while standing near a courthouse window Monday, and police are searching for a sniper. Judge Chuck Weller [official website; RGJ profile], of the Second Judicial District Court [official website] in Washoe County, was shot four times in the chest about 11:15 AM local time Monday and taken to a local hospital. The judge was reportedly breathing and in stable condition. Weller, 53, gave legal advice in a newspaper column and on a radio show before he was elected judge in 2004.

Police believe the shots were fired at the third floor of the Mills B. Lane Justice Center from a nearby parking garage. Three courthouses in Reno have been closed as SWAT teams search for the shooter. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic has also been restricted in parts of downtown Reno.

Mills still lives in Reno. He frequents local poker rooms playing low limit and gets all pissy when he loses pots amazing you figure the guy has to have a net worth well into the 7 figures and he gets upset at losing $50 pots.

Its turns out the Judge was the target of disgruntled court ruling...the guy who is now wanted was set up across the street as a sniper.

He's a very succesful person who became livid and eventually mentally unstable over the Judge's ruling agains him in a custody/divorce case.

This Judge is supposedly very hard on the men in these cases.

This guy owns a pawn shop and is earning $500,000 a year with assets of $4.5 million and didn't want to pay his wife $10,000 per month in alimony, so he killed her and then shot the judge. Then he called his cousin in Moraga, near where I live, and told him the story with the instructions to make sure and tell the media who he is and the reason for the shooting. Still at large. Thought to be still in the S.F. Bay Area armed and dangerous.

It just goes to show how fragile the mind can be when things go bad...I assume children were also involved in this case...these things can be worse than criminal trials for all involved...To be told by some stranger you can't see your own child, or limit the time has to be as tough as it gets mentally...I can honestly see how one could snap in this situation.

But now the lives of everyone involved are changed forever...very sad story, the guy had a lot going for him.

OMT didn't even tell the craziest part of the story. He didn't want to pay her alimony so much he filed for bankruptcy! They say the guy travels to Mexico and Costa Rica a lot. I doubt he is sticking around the Bay Area, he must have found a way to get across the border is my guess.

A Reno man suspected of stabbing his wife to death and shooting the family court judge who was hearing the couple's divorce turned himself in on Thursday in Mexico, officials said.
Darren Roy Mack, 45, was taken into custody about 10:30 p.m. in the lobby of a Puerto Vallarta hotel, said David Staretz, a spokesman for the FBI in Las Vegas. A bearded, unarmed Mack surrendered to Mexican immigration authorities, who were accompanied by an FBI agent.
In a statement, Mack's lawyer, Scott Freeman, said his client had chosen to surrender and return to Nevada instead of fighting extradition from Mexico. "He did so to be with his family, his children and to defend himself," the attorney said.
"The arrest of accused killer Darren Roy Mack proves that criminals cannot find a safe haven on either side of the border," Tony Garza, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, said in a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
Mack was flown Friday from Mexico to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and was booked at Dallas County Jail. He was expected to be extradited to Nevada later, authorities said.
Earlier Thursday, authorities said Mack had failed to appear at the U.S. Consulate in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, as he had promised Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick, said Reno Police Chief Michael Poehlman.
Mack, who had owned a pawnshop in Reno, had been sought on a Nevada arrest warrant charging him with murder with the use of a deadly weapon in the killing of his wife, Charla Mack. Her body was found June 12, face-down in a pool of blood in a Reno home where Darren Mack had been living, according to a police affidavit.
The FBI had been seeking Mack on a federal warrant accusing him of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The agency had placed Mack on its list of "Most Wanted" fugitives.
"We are greatly relieved that Darren Mack has been apprehended without any additional senseless bloodshed," the victim's brother, Christopher Broughton, told reporters Friday. "We look forward to justice being served for Charla's murder and the shooting of the judge. Nothing will bring my sister back. However, we don't have to look over our shoulders the rest of our lives."
Once Mack returns to Reno, it is expected he will be arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the shooting of Family Court Judge Chuck Weller, who was shot once in the chest by a sniper through a window in his chambers, Reno police said Friday. Weller, who had been handling Mack's divorce case, has been released from a hospital. In a statement Friday, Jim Denton, a spokesman for Weller, said the judge and his family "are grateful that Mr. Mack has been apprehended and that this tragedy has been resolved in a peaceful manner without further bloodshed."

Apparently, his wife had her hands tied with a prenup - she convinced him if he released her from the prenup she would let him have the children and some other things - he did - then she did the opposite of what she promised him - some people can only be pushed so far - and yes, imagine some judge telling you that you can see your children once a week when you have cared for them your whole life.

Wild Bill, Mills Lane has been dead for 5 years. I knew this guy and his brother Lanny well. His family basically wrote the pawnshop laws in the State of Nevada. His brother is the guy who shows up occasionally in a new Ferrari wearing, a $20,000 plus watch, tanned and just shot par on PGA West, where his family happens to own a home and are members of the club. If Darren only makes 500k a year he is grossly underpaid because Lanny spends that a year and doesn't work.
