I was told today that book making legend Bernie aka Mumbles passed away. Anyone who ever worked for WSI, TCBets, or VO group(in the last few years) surely know who is was. Anyone who ever worked for him knows that although he was difficult at times, and would often yell when pissed off, but also know that he allowed no trash talking from customers to his clerks and always referred to his employees as his kids. Anyone who has been around him knows that his stories are legendary and will be quoted till the end of time. The world of offshore wagering lost a legend, and he will be missed by all who know him.

RIP Mumbles

Bernie (“mumbles”) passed away at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. Cause of death was a massive heart attack (non-official). Those of you that knew Bernie know that if he could pick a place to go - it would have been the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

Bernie's body is being flown back to Florida as I type. Neil (Bernie’s son) is on his way back from the World Cup. Services will be Thursday afternoon in Boca Raton (I am hearing times of 1 p.m. or 2 p.m.).

Bernie was truly one of a kind. He had a heart of gold. His generosity was endless... I remember the time when we worked together in the 'old' V.O. Group building and I was looking to change the format of our Christmas Party, and Bernie suggested donating the Christmas Party money to a Charity for kids. The idea was amended slightly and ended up in an annual Christmas Party which involved all V.O. Group employees throwing a party specifically for homeless children. The 2005 Christmas party was thrown at an amusement park in San Jose with over 250+ orphans attending.

Bernie's knowledge in the industry was incredible, his contacts were endless and he was simply a 'good guy' for the industry. He will be missed - terribly, by those of us close to him.

Bernie is survived by his daughter (in NY), wife (in FL) and son (who will take over running 'the business').

Thank you,

I would like to send flowers as Im sure many others would like to, Bernie always busted my balls, but he always said I was a good kid and treated myself and his other employees very well. I heard that he passed away in vegas but I didnt want to relay bad information, Im sure he went out with a bang as was Bernie's style.

This place isn't paradise... trust me.

I never met him but I only hear kind words. Hopefully someone who has been under him will carry the torch and keep Bernie's legend alive. God bless him and his family.

Bernie was a great guy... had a unique style. I worked with him for 3 years, and will miss him. For those who are reading this and didn´t know him, the world of book making is losing a true "old school" legend. For those of you who did, remember.

The knowledge of the business he takes with him is a true treasure... his stories and experiences were fashioned in times we will never know. They´d either make us laugh or teach us something if we listened close. Sure he´d yell sometimes, but it brought life to the room and will be missed by all. He´d seldomly back down from sticking up for his clerks, no matter the player, no matter the amount. But don´t forget when he was quiet, watching games, contemplating lines, running numbers, decisions, winnings and losings... doing what he did best. His "puta macaron" is patented, as is his greatness.

It is a loss, and it is irreplaceable, but he will live on in our memories. And I wouldn´t change a single one. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Bernie was truly one of a kind. He was the epitome of an "Old School" bookie who had an uncanny way of putting his unique stamp of style and substance to an ever changing industry. He will be missed in many ways, by many people. He was a "Stand up guy”, generous amongst friends, and respected. His death comes as a shock to the offshore world and beyond.

In the year 2000, our office was shut down by the Municipality of Escazu. It was a spur of the moment situation that came as surprise to everyone working at Beteagle. Escazu decided they didn't want any sportbooks operating in their community. Well without hesitation Bernie opened the doors to his building and let us set up shop temporarily until we could find a new office. His act of generosity prevented us from losing any business or having any down time. It was pretty cramped for a week, all working under the same roof, but Bernie never lost his cool or his emotions. He was active, interested and overly helpful in getting us setup and comfortable in our new surroundings. That was Bernie, helpful, not overbearing, and wise beyond his years.

We at BetEagle would like to express what a tremendous loss this is and extend our most sincere condolences to Bernie’s family. Thanks Bernie for being who you were, they'll never be another.... Rest in Peace.
