Will Sportscenter ever come back down to earth?

I have no interest in seeing the fluff pieces they cram down our throats while showing them time after time after time again. They run the same stories three or four different nights in one week. None of the stories they do are that compelling they need to be repeated. The show has deteriorated from being top notch sports journalism to who can get the best one-liner in. Steven A. Smith sucks! He just bullies other analysts on ESPN and his show into taking his opinion as fact. He is style over substance. Chris Berman needs to go, his schtick is so old and boring. Can't you sell meat for a living? White boy Scott Van Pelt seems to be joining Stuart Scott in trying to find new catch phrases that annoy me and others. Poker needs to go, it's a travesty I get to witness a bunch of goofballs take 2 hours to decide what to call, and do we really need marathons of it? The shows are pathetic, at least in my opinion. Around the Horn comes off as disorganized. There's always people talking over one another, and they're forever changing the timing at the end of the show. PTI doesnt excite me at all either. It's Kornheiser making an opinion while Wilbon trys to bash it, or vice versa. The whole entire show. They need to stop leading off with the same crap. Only reason, and I repeat, ONLY REASON, I watch ESPN is for a game or baseball tonight. Ravech and Reynolds do put on a great show with solid baseball analysis.

It's pretty sad that a 23 year old like me understands what Sportscenter trys to do. Now a days, every thing revolves around teens and younger audiences. I think that's wrong because it's destroying the quality that these shows/stations used to have, but you have to remember that teens are the market where the money is.

Sportscenter has def. lost what it used to have...

but I do enjoy Baseball Tonight - good mix of personalities, really like Harold Reynolds & John Kruk. The only guy that irritates me is Steve Phillips - just have real difficulty 'listening' to his analysis on moves/trades/decisions/etc. When he was arguably the worst GM in the '90's. I beleive the Mets are still paying for Bonilla & Mo Vaughn in some way.

You're on point about that Steve Phillips guy. I was listening to him the yesterday or the other night. Man oh man, what the f was he talking about that made Kruk/Reynolds just die laughing or made them roll their eyes in the back of their head. I believe Kruk was leaning back in his chair half the show from Phillips comments.

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Kruk is great...he says what he feels & he'll even make fun of himself. The other night during highlights he was saying on how someone hasent been able to find his swing lately & the very next clip was the guy hitting a homer. His reaction was like "man dont I look like a dope."

Funny side story. Peter Gammons makes a weekly appearance on the local sports radio here in MA. I remember him talking about Baseball Tonight last year - and giving a lot of props to HR & Kruk on the good jobs they do. He also went on to say how there are a ton of ex-mlb players who 'tryout' to be an analyst and we would be surprised on how little they know about the current season.

One candidate (he refused to mention his name) did not even know who Albert Pujols was...pretty scary, lol. And was interviewing to be a MLB analyst - hence why Steve Phillips has a job.

SC is incredibly stale these days. I had always loved the show in the past. Been watching it for a decade at least.

I still like, the 'hot list', 'pti' and 'around the horn'

And I never thought I would say this, but I now enjoy 'Rome is burning' more than SC.

My biggest problem with Sportscenter today versus in the past is that they don't show enough of each game. Nowadays unless it's a huge game (NBA finals, WS, etc) you are basically getting a few highlight plays and the final score.

The way they cover big games now is the way they used to cover ALL games. Every game has a storyline--this team went up, then guy1 game off the bench and drained 4 3-pointers in a row to get his team back in it, but in the 4th guy2 was just too good and kept the small lead--but now on SC you get this: here's guy1 making a dunk, here's guy2 shooting a 3, here's the final score. It's awful. They do this to make room for their crappy heartthrob pieces about some guy in a wheelchair who still runs track.

A sports recap show should be a shortened substitute for watching an entire game, not a 30-minute montage of dunks and home runs. Save that for the "gatorade/under armor/abc/disney/holiday inn/budweiser/coors ultimate highlight" :nopityA:

Nobody knows how to disect a play or a game like Harold Reynolds. Simply the best.

Gammons might have the gossip,
but he can't break down a played game or a matchup like our beloved Harold.

Why do they have Outside the Lines at 12:40 AM? Do they show it at a real time besides this?

I've known HR since I was 4...he is the anti-athlete, one of the most sincere and kind persons one could meet.

Remember when Sportscenter was just 30 minutes most of the time? These hour long shows all day long are what is wrong. They have too many networks and need to fill in all those hours so this is the way they do it.
