hey doug,...i didnt go through this whole post(article) but i did want to say a couple things,........as i was growing up and as i actually got a degree and worked some of the finner places,..................its really wide open,.......there are some pasionate chefs,...there are some great restruants,....i hate to get all eateries linked into one common thought,.........generally i think that most places are fine,....yeah there are always things that need to be addressed,...but the one bad experience i saw,.....first hand mind you was,........oh probally back in early 90's,....someone sent this breakfast/lunch special back,....it was a ittalion frittata(sp?) basically an omlette type item,.........this lady who was a truely miserable person,......actually spit in it,............no lie,...just blew my mind,..........i dont doubt it happens but man,...to see her do that,...........wow,..always remembered that,...i didnt do much and for that i probally should have done something about it,.......but its a good example,....she was the one in charge,......tough when the manager/chef does that,.......and you are young/early in your career with little to no authority to do anything about it,..................well i doubt that person ever amounted to anything, but there are probally people out there who do it.:icon_conf

Great.

I've also heard that the bathroom water in a restaurant is cleaner than the water used to make the ice in restaurants. Actually, someone from the RX might've posted that a while ago.

Oh, and everyone should watch that movie, "Waiting," with Ryan Reynolds in it. Hilarious, but equally disturbing.

I can see a restaurant re-using butter, it's expensive enough, and I guess no health risk. Motivation is there. You're probably OK in a hotel setting, but more vulnerable to recycled food in a smaller place. Something to consider.

How does the water know if it's going to the bathroom or the kitchen ? Shouldn't it be the same quality ?

The restaurant toilet probably has less germs than your kitchen water spicket. People worry way too much

I have read that in a study, water directly out of the toilet at a fast food rest is cleaner than the ice in your soda (or any drink).

Yes, if ice machines were cleaned as often as toilets, they would be the same.

Why do people obsess over germs in bathrooms? I don't get it. It's like a national germ-a-phobic psychosis people have about pee-pee. Food handlers aside. For instance, why do people look down on someone who goes number one and doesn't wash their hands afterward? Assuming they haven't swept their hands over the floor after zipping up, what could they have touched that is so dirty? And why would it bother someone else they didn't wash afterward?

Two of the most bateria ridden surfaces we commonly come in contact with are: public keyboards and shopping cart handles.

Any door knob you touch has probably been touched by hundreds of other people. Call me a germ-a-phobe if you want, I don't want you pissing on your hand, not washing it and leaving urine on the door knob of the bathroom or main entrance or whatever.

Anyone that worked in a restaurant should not be surprised, The one I worked at as a kid would reuse the buns and loaf of bread that were brought back to the kitchen and had not been cut.

Just bring the basket to the next customers coming in.

I'm currently a server at a Ruby Tuesday near Tampa, Florida. First of all, it's my first experience in the industry and it has truely been eye-opening. But not for the reasons sited in the 20/20 report. Granted, I worked last night and didn't see the report, but if someone sends food back, the entire item is re-cooked. We have at least three mangers on duty all the time and one is in the kitchen. Also when we (servers) bus a table, all items must be taken back to the washing area, even those not used, like a table service with the napkin still wrapped around it or even unused to-go boxes at tables must be thrown out. I haven't seen "Waiting", but I heard it's very funny.

Hey Hawkeye, since you are affiliated with the Ruby Tuesday franchise, do you have an opinion on whether or not the stock is a buy? Symbol is "RI." One just finally opened in Honolulu, and its always crowded. I wonder if its as popular on the mainland. Whats your observation of the head count?
