Can someone explain to me the old moneyline that they still post in the Newspapers?

I have no idea why the newspapers still use that fractional moneyline or whetever they call it.

I am just curious. Maybe some of you old-times can teach me how to read one of those things. I dont even understand how to read the baseball lines in the newspapers.

I know its not important, but it would be nice to see what they list in the papers just for information.

Never had to deal with those lines. Only been betting since 1995 and never had to deal with them.

THANKS

This could be good to know for dealing with locals,
as i've heard that's what some go by, regardless
of injuries, lineups, weather reports, etc

I cant give an example. Thats why I asked the question. I have heard that some locals still use these lines.

I opened an account at ESB of all places around 95, and have never dealt directly with a local in my life.

Neither have i dealt with a local. I think it would be illegal
up in Canada, & how could you trust a complete stranger
anyway? Maybe in time if you started out small and they
earned your trust.

Back in the days {early 90's} when i didn't know how to use
a computer and phone bet i'd consult the newpaper lines.
Knew how to read them then, so if they haven't changed
probably could remember, which is why i asked for a sample.
But since i haven't subscribed to a paper since way back
then, & as i age i'm losing my mind {memory}, i can't recall
what they used to be like.

I tried finding some sample lines on the internet, but cant find any. I will look some more.

I guess this means you lay 12 on the Mets to win 5.

Or 120 to win 50.

IOW, the Mets are -240.

I actually have used these old lines plenty in the past but don't know any locals anymore. What's hard about it? I always could do the conversion of what I wanted to bet in my head while the bookie was figuring it out on paper.I used to bet different amounts on my games usually back then. I guess it's what you get used to. With online betting lines it took me a while to get adjusted to them.

I know of a couple locals in the Northeast that still quote lines as "Blue Jays -8" or "Marlins +7," which means laying 8 to win 5 on the Blue Jays, or -160, or risking 5 to win 7 on the Marlins, or +140.

You basically have to multiply each number by 20. It isnt that hard once you know that fact.

Philadelphia would be -120 and Tampa would be +100.

This is way that we did the lines back when I was in college, booking baseball bets. But then again, we didnt have the internet at that time either!!

multiply whatever number it takes to get to 100 on the second number and then take the other number and multiply by that same number (wow that sounds confusing)
Examples:
New York is 7:5 5 times 20 =100 so multiply 7 times 20 =140 line is -140/+100 (first number is the favorite)
Detroit 3:2 2 times 50 =100 3 times 50 =150 -150/+100
NY Mets 12:5 is 5 times 20 =100 12 times 20 =240 -240/+100
Cleveland 11:10 i=no reason to do -110/+100

I don't think that's correct Ice,you have a +100 paired up with both -110 and -150, and -240.

I think once you get one side like -150 (3-2) you then work the other side to get +130. The -240 probably goes with +200.

Thanks.

I wonder why they made something that could be so simple so complicated back then.

they changed it so Kodiak could get his lines without having to do all that math

oops. What I meant is that is the favorite line -240 than its 20 cents less or whatever like you said so -150 would be plus +130 on the other side. No I am confused:puppy: . I got the favorite's number right (I think). Where's Fish he is old school.

I meant just the favorites by 20. As a bookie back then, we just subtracted 20 from the favorite up until minus 200, then it was a 80 cent difference
