What are the Angels thinking? I saw this on the ticker this morning, and couldn't believe it. This guy has been lights out! Send his brother down, or better yet, send him to the beer stand and pay him by commission.

Colon, Escobar, Lackey, Sanata, Weaver

Looks pretty good to me. Hard to believe this team is in last.

Probably because sending him down comes with no penalty. Whereas sending other players down could require giving them their outright release or putting them on waivers, etc. They could recall Jared W. at any time for a start. I think it's related to service time in the bigs. That's why they can't send down older brother.

Jered is 4-0 with a 1.37 era, 22 KO to 4 walks and a 0.76 whip ? There is no reason other than stupidity for this ! If you were Jered and pitched lights out and as a reward they sent you back down... How would you feel ?

I'll just add that this is probably a temporary move and gives them time to figure out how to re-shuffle the 40/25 man roster. I think it's likely that he's back with the big club very soon.

Yeah this is temporary move...

But remember fellas, he is still very young. A lot of ball clubs are being cautious w/ their young arms (anti-cubs philosophy). The Angels are not looking like a Playoff team (right now), this may have been different if they were being the ole Angels.

Also- business wise...very difficult to send Jeff Weaver to the minors. Makes too much money, as we saw w/ Russ Ortiz - its better to outright release him. But they still beleive they can possibly trade him back to the National League. He wasnt great in the National League, but his quantity of quality starts were better. So they're gonna try to get the most value out of him. Sending him down - will give him zero trade value.

But w/ injuries & inconsistency...this is def. a temp. move.

I give Jered credit for taking the news with class, saying something to the effect that he's looking to improve and get back to the Majors.

Too bad the Angels can get ZERO takers for his brother, or this wouldn't be happening.

Also, be on the lookout for a possible trade with Tampa Bay involving Ervin Santana in some sort of package deal for Carl Crawford

Yeah - I just read that, ego....def. any interesting possible move. Would think each player were untouchable. I beleive the Red Sox were trying very hard to get Santana during the trade discussions for Manny. But getting someone like Crawford (younger, and obviously very affordable - incomparison w/ Manny) would def. make them consider it.

Never happen in a million years. It would take a lot more than Santana to pry Crawford loose. Under the old ownership, it wouldn't surprise me because they were basically clueless(the Kazmir deal excluded). The new ownership has built up a lot of goodwill, and a Santana-Crawford deal would erase that in a flash. The base is small enough as it is, but there is no one I know that follows the Rays that would be happy with that deal. The beat writers and talk radio all believe it's nothing more than wishful thinking on the Angels part. Stanger things have happened though, and if this happens I will be shocked, and will package all of my DRay gear and send it to them with a promise to stop attending games(yes, there are some of us that do attend, lol).

As for Weaver, I agree that this is probably just a short term deal. He probably has options available, and this buys them a little time to evaluate their roster to determine their next step.

They have to send him down so he can pitch on a normal 5 day rotation

agreed, bonehead move it seems. if anything jeff weaver should have been sent to bullpen and leave the other weaver in the rotation.

Remember Kerry Wood...They over used him big time in his rookie season. 9 times he had over 120 pitches as they were in the pennant race. Riggleman admits now that they should have kept him on a strict 100 pitch count that season and couldn't do it in a race. He said if he were to do it over again he would have sent him back to AAA in May or June so they could have kept him under the 100 pitch count.

Maybe the Angels read the same article I did.

Yeah Barney...thats exactly who I was thinking of...I guess you can also say the same about Prior (but not to the Wood extent).

You're seeing almost every team be very cautious w/ a young pitchers' work load. Especially w/ the minors are easily accessible and can give the kids a steady 5 day rotation & not burn them out.

You guys remember when Johan Santana first broke onto the scene? Kid was unbeleivable...yet the Twins refused to throw him into a huge work load right away,...used him in middle releif, then low pitch count starts, etc. Hell pitchers like Rick Reid were getting the starts, but its all about preparing these kids for duty in the future. The Twins are doing the same w/ Liriano...and other pitchers like Verlander, Hamels, Lester, Cain, Kng Felix - you see clubs be very cautious about pitch counts/starts and are not afraid to send them back to the minors for 'regular' work.

Gammons said they r trying to get Weavers (Jeff) value up so they can unload him...If they throw him in the bullpen, a team might not want to suck up his high salary....

Who knows, but thats what Gammons said

Orioles @ Angels - Saturday
<HR style="COLOR: #fdde82" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->LISTED pitchers of Bedard and Jered Weaver ONLY

i see Jered Weaver is making his MLB debut tonite. congrats to you Jered. i got to see jered pitch several times at long beach state when he faced my fullerton titans

NOT very impressed by him

first off he is every bit as emotionally unstable as his brother Jeff - maybe even more so

second - the jered weaver i saw ONLY had a fastball and nothing else. in college you can get away with it because you are so much better than most hitters so throwing a fastball past them is no biggie. in the minor leagues he put up solid numbers - but once again - the key words are MINOR LEAGUES

anyone know what happens in the big leagues to pitchers who ONLY have a fastball and NOTHING else? that's right - the game turns into BP for the other team

i fully expect to see that here. i expect the orioles to score a TON of runs tonite and just light up Weaver like a Xmas tree

I know Bedard will never be confused for Roger Clemens but compared to Jered he will

J/K winky... GL to Tuffy today and can't wait for Bronco ball.

I was actually going to post this when I saw it earlier in the week, couldn't believe they would consider it. Amazing what salaries and time in majors will do when it comes to making boneheaded moves.

Give me the same lineup and I'd take:
Jered Weaver -200
Jeff Weaver +180
