Not much that I like today on getaway day, but the one that stood out to me was the Yankees trying to take the series vs. this inconsistent Nationals team. So, I'll keep the play small at 2*.
Yankees are a good road team, while Washington has not only played inconsistent ball overall, they have played the same way at home. Last night's game was symbolic in that, getting blown out early, and then making that crazy comeback for the win. I think overall the Yankees are comfortable playing at DC, they took game 1, they were dominating game 2 before that collapse. Yankees now face a rubber game 3, and they have been great at taking rubber games, 5-1 on the year in this spot.
They also go to their hot hand, Chien Mien Wang. Wang is a streaky pitcher which is why I am going to ride him here. He started off the season solid, had a stretch of a few bad games in a row, now has been reinserted into the rotation and has been on fire. I'll stick with Wang and this obviously outstanding Yankee lineup that can hang 10 runs on any given day. Also kept this play low because Wang has struggled on the road, but I will still stick with the hot hand here and play it small.
On the flip side you have the rookie O'Connor who has pitched well this year. Opponents only batting in the low .200's against him. The rookie is coming off his worst outing of the year, and I wonder how he will respond. First year in the big leagues and he got ripped last game, that should be fresh in his mind. He has to be wondering if it was a fluke game, or if he is good enough to really get it done. These are things that go through a pitcher's mind after getting a shelling. Now he faces a tall task of stopping this Yankees lineup, and I will bet he wont be able to bounceback and get his club a win.
Overall, the better team, with the hotter pitcher, trying to clinch a series win in which they have done 5 out of 6 times this year vs. a rookie pitcher today who struggled his last time out.
