Seems like they are a new wave of really young hard throwing pitchers in baseball.
Felix Hernandez
Hammels (not sure of 1st name)
Fransico Liriano
Johnathon Papelbon
Justin Verlander
Joel Zumaya
Brandon Webb (not really young, 27)
Jeremy Bonderman
Just to name a few

I don't ever remeber a time when there was this much GOOD young talented pitchers having a breakout season like this.

Hard throwers are a dime a dozen. Go to any minor league game and there's always one or two guys hitting the upper 90s.

It's all about the movement of the pitches and changing speeds.

Now you've narrowed it down.

Sorry, I know you're talking about major leaguers here, not minor leaguers (I got minor leaguers on the brain just having returned from Binghamton, NY where I saw a couple of AA Mets games) but there are always promising young pitchers--they're like strawberries and spoil easily.

low to possibile mid 90's yes. Upper 90's there are not that many.

but these guys I have mentioned are putting up HUGE numbers right now.

Scott Kazmir
Jon Lester
Matt Cain
Ervin Santana
Jered Weaver
Boof Bonser
Anthony Reyes

etc etc

there are a ton i'm forgetting at the moment as well...you will see teams be VERY patient w/ some of these guys. Last year Verlander was sent back to the minors, same for Weaver this year...nobody wants to do what the Cubs did w/ Wood & Prior.

Makes for tricky wagering, as you will see a lot of low pitch counts...Liriano going over 90 pitches tonight, is a rare occurence.

Minors is LOADED with upper 90's pitchers. Most of them are Dominican, they cant change speeds, they cant locate, and they dont know where it's going.

I wont even get into the ability to hold runners on, mental toughness, fielding their position, getting out of jams, etc.

It truly takes a complete player to be a big league pitcher. Minors has plenty of arms.

totally disagree on UPPER 90's. Not mid 90's but upper 90's are few and far between. But you are saying loaded. I guess what is your defintion of loaded. Less than 10% of the pitchers in minors throw that hard.

Pitchers MPH is like 40 yard dash times in Football, they are a little distorted by the fans and media.

I am willing to bet that upper 90's (97+ and up consistently) is less than 10% of major leaguers and they are the best of the best.

Heck I have watched Detroit Tigers (75% of them) for 10+ years, since they have had the radar gun in TV and this year is the first time I have EVER seen a Tiger pitcher(Zumaya and Veralnder) hit upper 90's and they are considered freak of natures. Even Bonderman may get lucky and hit 96 MPH once in a great while but never no higher than that and he is considered a power pitcher

Like I said I guess it depends on your definintion of loaded is.
