SAD News to Pass On!

i got this e-mail today from "Bart Simpson"
**************************************************
Sorry if you get this message twice, haven't sent to the list in a
while, and now have to send some sad news.

Bobby (Bryde) passed away Thursday, after a fight with cancer.

I don't have any more details at this time, will forward them as I
find out anything.

I realize that I may be sending this to some people who didn't know Bobby, and if you fall into that category, I apologize, but didn't want to miss sending this to someone who might want to know.

Take Care,
Bart

<!-- toctype = X-unknown -->I knew he was sick and not feeling well - but i never knew how bad he was although he had e-mailed me about 1 month ago telling me he had to have more work done on him

BB was one of the BEST hockey and CFL guys i have ever known - EVER. he spoke his mind and didn't care if you liked what he said, or not. his thoughts were very educated and well thought out - not off the top of his head. he was abrasive - but that is what made him Bobby Bryde

on trips to vegas i would try and go see him. the last time i saw him was T-giving weekend 2004. USC hosted Notre Dame and i came over to his house to watch the game. i brought a pizza - but bobby told me he would only eat some if i didn't tell his doctor he was breaking his diet. we watched the game and talked a lot. for those who have never been to his house - UNREAL! the NHL HOF pales in comparison to what BB has at his house. he has tapes of more games than you can iimagine. come playoff time he has friends tape games of local teams for him - i taped Ducks' games this season and their last playoff run. he has a million TVs and watches them all at once

he will be greatly missed by those who knew him. his funeral will be attended by many - some sad to see him pass - others to make sure he passed :) trust me - he had plenty of enemies and people who hated him - and Vice Versa. Put BB and Robert Walker in the same room and only 1 of them comes out alive - and my guess is Bobby would have been the one to walk away

Frau Hockeymeister (what he jokingly called himself)

you will be missed. my guess is right now he is talking to guys like Toe Blake and Maurice Richard about some of their fave games and telling them what they did wrong in each and every one of them

Oh boy, this comes as a complete shock to me.

Bobby and myself did a radio show in Vegas together a few times and I also hung out with him on many occassions with him and other friends of ours at our favorite hockey bar in Vegas(Thumpers on E. Flamingo).

Again, this is stunning news because I knew nothing of his fight with cancer.

Damn

Very sad news, BB was a big time contributor to the hockey forum a few years back. Always willing to give insightful answers to hockey handicapping questions.

One of the best CFL and NHL handicappers I've ever known and it was through Winky. Do remember his posts here. Very sad news for sure.

Bobby was nice enough to send me a VHS cassette of some highlights of the Big Bad Boston Bruins games from the 1972 season. I still have it and actually still pull the old VCR out to go down hockey's memory lane.

RIP. BB.

Thank you winkyduck for the kind words that you said about Bobby Bryde and for letting people know about his passing on Thursday. I started this thread as my tribute to a wonderful person and to share an important thought with my fellow posters.

I am very proud to say Bobby Bryde was my friend. I've known him for the better part of a decade and we spent some really good times together. One of my favorite things to do was to pick up some fast food and go over Bobby's house and watch hockey or other sports on one of his five or six televisions. Yes, he was a very sharp hockey handicapper and was also a very good at handicapping the Canadien Football League but he was a very unique man. He had a very outgoing personality and could talk sports, current events or just about anything you wanted to talk about. He was a very smart guy. He was a good friend to so many people. Bobby said what was on his mind and would call someone out if he thought they were wrong or being phony. If a sportsbook was using a 20 cent hockey line, he would name the place and take them to task for it. Here in Las Vegas if he saw a sportsbook openly violating a gaming regulation or regulations, he would let the sportsbook director know about and if the sportsbook director didn't do anything about it then Bobby would notify the Gaming Commission and let them handle it. He was a stand up guy.

Bobby and I hadn't spoken for quite a few months. Nothing happened between us but I was just sort of doing my own thing. I thought many times about picking up the phone and giving him a call but I didn't. My friend passed away on Thursday and I didn't get a chance to tell him just how much I loved him and how much I cared about him. I didn't even know he was sick. I just wish I could have held his hand and patted him on the shoulder and said "Good bye Bobby".

I talked to Bobby's mother this morning and his wonderful girlfriend Debbie, better known as Frau Hockeymeister as well as some of his many friends. As soon as I hear of any funeral arrangements, I will let all of you know.

This is where my message to my fellow posters comes in. Sometime before the weekend is over, pick up the phone and call someone you've been thinking about. Whether it be a friend or relative, say hello and catch up on things. If you haven't talked to a special person or special people in your life in a while and you're not sure why you haven't talked, just call them and tell them how much they mean to you. I didn't get a chance to tell Bobby just how much he meant to me but I can tell all of you just how much he meant to so many people.

Soccer - GREAT job

you hit the nail on the head big time

BB was an expert in EVEYTHING - but he wasn't someone who came across as knowing more than you and demeaning you for it. he would send out picks on COLLEGE hockey as well as ANY hockey out there. he would send out CFL and CWS picks, too - he loved Omaha and the play surrounding it. if there was a game played odds are Bobby Bryde knew what side to play

like Bob the times i spent at his place were treasured moments and ones i will always remember with fondness - and as Bob can tell you - the guy had a MILLION hockey tapes all over his place. BB once said he was offered A LOT of money for his stuff but turned it all down. maybe Debbie (and thanks BB - it is Debiie who is Frau - BB was "Herr") can sell them and make some money to live on although they have/had a nice house

Bob is right about BB not being afraid to pick up the phone and let someone "have it" if he felt they were wrong - or wronging someone

BB ALWAYS seemed to be working on a "project" of some sorts and would always seem to be e-mailing me asking if my bro (a lawyer) could look over a few things for him). he would frequently ask us for our fave stories to tell on just about any topic for an article he was doing. he ALWAYS seemed to have some sort of gathering going on - and we were ALWAYS invited - even though most of us could never attend - although he actually wanted us to be there. if he didn't like you - he would make your life a living hell. if he liked you - he would do just about ANYTHING for you

check out this for proof: bb hockey invite/Another Hockey Party/sunday may 15. 11 AM./mens ice hockey world championship gold medal game/followed by a game from the 1960's/debbie will be cooking!/bring own beverages and snacks/let us know by...if will attend.

if you REALLY wanted to "goad him on" just mention the name

Robert Walker

and stand back. you will be hard pressed to find someone who HATED RW more than BB - and BB was more than willing to tell you about it

like Bob so many times i thought about calling him - but never did because i could "do it tomorrow". well - "tomorrow" has come and i can't call him anymore

i loved the e-mails he would send about he and debbie and something he thought would be funny that happened between the 2 of them - something she said or did

i doubt he would object to me posting a few of the "funnies" he sent my way:

Friday April 22, 2005 (The e-mail headline read: Debbie is Happy): Norway beat china this morning 25-1 (In Hockey). guess anyone from taiwan has to take solace where they can get it...

Tue Feb 1, 2005 (Debbie strikes again!): last night i asked debbie why she started a new diet. "Well, since you started reading that new book," she said, "you've been looking at me funny." the new book, now halfway through? "ordeal by hunger" the story of the donner party!

BB - you have no idea how much you will be missed

Of all the e-mails he sent out - this might be the one i remember the most - sent - and it also showed how maybe the life he lived was a complex one - where he had many sides to him:

12/31/04

However, I do have some New Year’s resolutions (although they are a
huge dog to be kept for more than a week):

I promise to stop lifting an imaginary rifle and pretending to point it
and fire it at one of the 20 Latino’s who live next door whenever they
park in front of my driveway.

I promise to return the poison I bought for the neighbor's dog.

I promise to attend at least one of the “anger management” classes my
friends are always sending me brochures for.

I promise to destroy the voo-doo doll of one of the Las Vegas Sports
book Directors.

I promise to explain to Debbie that “Helter-Skelter” is NOT really
‘our’ song.

I promise to stop asking Debbie why she is always sharpening her
chop-sticks (never marry a woman who is great with a pocket-knife).

I promise to stop using the F-word every f*cking (he actually used the word in the e-mail) day.

I promise to cut back threatening my Homeowner’s Association to even
number days; I promise to cut back threatening the security company to
odd number days.

Above all, although I don’t have many friends, the ones I do have are
good people, and I will try to keep them and listen to them
(occasionally).

Debbie and I hope everyone has a safe holiday.

Bobby was unique. being a hockey buff i met him first online at this site when he was thehockey guy. we continued an email friendship for 3 years. the one time i was in vegas early on he could not shake freee as it was mid football season. whenever wesaid hey you have been terrific what can wee do for you he would say nothing but take care of thewife. So 3 of the the 3 amigos from wasington s he called us would send gifts to d. he always sent us military music discs etc.
For a guy I never met I feel very sad over what has happened to him. I spoke with him 2 weeks ago as I called and he was hoping to gain strength to do the CFL. I guess he is just a little north of there now looking down and watching us all. he shall be sorely missed.

I just listened to the entire interview and Bryde said back in November that Edmonton was great value at 40-1....as well as Buffalo at 30-1....This was a pretty nice interview.
