World Cup HAS to change format!

1. Too many sucky teams are advancing based on some lucky goal or atrocious officiating. At least in first round there are two games remaining to try and recoup.

The round of 16 HAS to continue with 4 four-team groups, then the round of 8 with two groups, ending with one final group of 4- whose top two teams play for the title.

Make the cream rise to the top. Why let the championship ride on ONE FLUKEY game along the way, destroying all the work in qualifying and initial WC round? Any team can beat any team for one game, but cannot keep getting lucky for a series of games.

2. Allow liberal substitution.

There are many sports where the best team doesn't always win, but the real scoring opportunities in soccer are so damn rare, it really does seem like there is a higher level of "flukiness" to it.

Not what i said-- top two teams from each group advance-- heck.. they could even do like our football on that second & third-round format-- first seed or two gets a bye, top two third-placers square off...give others a bit of a rest...

It's every four years as opposed to every year...not only for my reasons, but just to milk more out of it

You'd never get the clubs to agree to that.

The clubs pay the money, not the international associations. If they have players playing 20+ games at the World Cup, they'll be sub-standard for the next season, which starts in August.

My suggestion:

If a player dives, or commits a foul not punished by the ref, allow FIFA to give him a yelloe/red card after the game.

That rule would apply to Henry today and the Italian guy yesterday.

Agree completely that they should curb the constant diving by handing out yellows for blatant dives

OR, put in subsequent rounds a format like in college baseball.......
