BALTIMORE -1 +1.06 over Philadelphia (Pinny)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The Phillies are in a real serious funk at the moment and how they’re going to pull this one out is beyond us. They got drilled yesterday in both games of a DH and went to bed feeling horrible and will wake up feeling worse. Losing is highly contagious and the frame of mind of these Phillies has to be in question. They’ve dropped eight in a row and 15 of 18 and Ryan Madson and that beat up bullpen sure doesn’t appear to be the answer. Madson’s numbers are just plain ugly. He’s allowed 97 hits and 15 jacks in just 71.2 innings. He’s also walked 31and his 6.40 ERA is actually flattering. His 7-5 record is this year’s most misleading number on any pitcher in the business; the man hasn’t pitched well enough to be 2-10, let alone 7-5. Rodrigo Lopez has really turned his season around. He went through a stretch in which he went 1-7 with an 8.07 ERA, however, he’s 4-1 with a 3.99 ERA in his last six starts and that’s much more significant. Lopez has won three straight home starts, posting a 3.54 ERA and the Orioles have won four of five. They’ve simply beaten down this invader and things absolutely don’t figure to change here. Play: Baltimore –1 +1.06 (Risking 1.5 units).

Washington +2.02 over TORONTO (Pinny)
We understand that the Nationals are reeling big time and we also understand that the Jays are winning frequently, not to mention that Toronto’s ace, Roy Halliday is on the mound and thus, the big price. Halliday needs no introduction, the man has been as consistent and effective as any pitcher in the business over the past six or seven years and he’s simply the straight goods. However, this isn’t about that, this choice is all about backing John Patterson, one of baseball’s best pitchers that nobody has heard of. Last year he quietly went 9-7 with an ERA of 3.13 in 31 starts, striking out 185 in 198 innings and allowing just 172 hits. This season he spent two months on the DL before returning in his last start to face the Orioles. He went six frames in his return and in typical Patterson fashion, he allowed six hits and one earned run and didn’t walk a batter. In five starts this season covering 31.2 innings, Patterson has allowed 23 hits, walked just five batters and has struck out 35. The opposition is hitting a puny .204 against him and with the way this guy chucks two lousy runs could conceivably get us to the cashier’s booth here. Bottom line here is big value on a pitcher that’s been as good or better than guys named Schilling, Pedro Martinez, Halliday, Peavy, Schmidt or anyone else for that matter. If those guys were getting a take-back of better than 2-1 it would be considered an error and the line would be taken down and re-posted. Difference here is that this is not an error and it’s likely the very last time you’ll ever see a price even close to this one with Patterson on the mound. Huge, huge overlay. Play: Washington +2.02 (Risking 1.5 units).

Patterson is really going to have to pitch a gem tonight the way this pitiful Nats lineup looks so far against Halliday:smoking:
