EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Northwestern University football coach Randy Walker died of an apparent heart attack Thursday night. He was 52.
Walker died after feeling chest pains around 10 p.m. at his suburban Chicago home, said Mike Wolf, the school's assistant athletic director for media services.

"This is a devastating loss, not only for our athletic program, but for the entire Northwestern community," athletic director Mark Murphy said in a statement early Friday. "Randy truly embraced Northwestern and its mission, and cared deeply for his student-athletes, both on and off the field."

Walker was the first Northwestern coach to lead the school to three bowl games. The Wildcats lost to UCLA 50-38 in the Sun Bowl last December. In October 2004, Walker checked himself into a hospital after experiencing chest pains. He was diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle; the condition is not a common ailment, and is usually caused by a virus.

Walker was out of the hospital in two days, and said he was taking a new approach to his diet and work schedule.

"I've really taken my doctor's orders to heart, because frankly, I want to see my grandkids someday," he said at the time.

Two months ago, Northwestern gave Walker a four-year extension through the 2011 season. He joined the school in 1999 after nine years at Miami of Ohio.

Walker's Wildcats posted 37 wins, going 7-5 last season. He led the team to three bowl games since 2000.

Northwestern shared the Big Ten title in 2000 and went to the Alamo Bowl. The Wildcats also went to the 2003 Motor City Bowl.

Walker was the first Wildcats coach to guide the team to four seasons with at least six wins since C.M. Hollister in 1899-1902.

He is survived by his wife, Tamara, and two children, Abbey, 28, and Jamie, 25, who is the school's football recruiting assistant.

Very sad year for unexpected celebrity and sports deaths...Walker seemed like a very youthful 52 year old man.

fifty fucking two!

Live for the day...and by all means take your health seriously and exercise .

Walker went out a winner, that team last year came out of nowhere , reember in the beginning of the year they dropped a tough loss to Penn State and still recovered to be in the hunt in the Big Ten .

His final game a loss to UCLA that saw Northwestern blow a 22-0 lead...

Most gamblers will recall this game because the ending was so bizarre...all the late scoring and TWO ONSIDE KICKS RETURNED FOR TOUCHDOWNS!

Very sad day for Northwestern family. I liked the guy.

By the way, thanks for bringing up memories of the game.

A good Randy Walker story from a fan on the MAC board.

I became a Randy Walker fan last winter. In February, he hosted a
"Meet The Recruits" night at Northwestern's Booster Club. Apparently, a number of the "fans" were still upset that the placekicker missed a couple of Sun Bowl F.G's. ( Don't know why, score shows it would not have made a difference.)

Walker announced a placekicker was among the recruits. The room erupted with cheers, hoots and derisive comments about the current placekicker.

Then Walker did something more coaches should have the, ummm, manhood to do. He stopped and glared at the crowd, then said something to the affect of: "(name of placekicker) worked hard for you for four years. He's given up breaks, vacations, and most of his social life to play for your team. Most of you crap your pants over a ten dollar putt, so save the boos when a 22 year old misses a 45 yard field goal in front of 50,000 people in the biggest game of the year."

That was the day I became a Randy Walker fan.

He was a true innovator as a coach...his teams couldn't recruit with the Michigan's and Ohio State's but he made his team competetive with his spread offense, and they moved the ball with the best of them....

In reality he was an underrated coach if anything.

What he and Gary Barnett did for that program is just short of a miracle. It would be the equivalent of Baylor winning the Big 12, Temple winning the Big East, or Vandy winning the SEC. And he liked it at Evanston too. He could have made huge $$ elsewhere. It takes a special athlete to play football at NW. He graduated over 90% of his players, including 100% last year.

Mighty tragic loss, and huge shoes to fill at NW.

Huge loss is right. He looked good for 52, I have to wonder if there was some family history of heart problems.

His passing reminded me of when one of his players (Rashidi Wheeler) died about five years ago during a conditioning workout on a brutally hot day. If I recall correctly, things got a little nasty with regards to all the accusations flying around.
