Made me start thinking all day today how important each moment of our lives are.

Crazy to think that just YESTERDAY I was playing catch with him on the beach. Will never be able to walk again.

I still can't even believe this really happened. Just keep thinking of the hundreds of things we used to do together and how nothing will ever be the same.

Kruser, I don't even know what to say. My heart goes out to him and his family and to you. I sure makes you think about all the things we take for granted. I'm sure what he can use most right now is a good friend and its good to know he has someone like you.

Here is the story:cryingcry

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines remains in serious condition after falling through a hole in a city bridge.

The man fell 30 feet to the concrete below the Southwest Ninth Bridge just north of the Raccoon River.
Now the city plans to investigate what happened.
Police said that 22-year-old Timothy Delong and his 22-year-old friend Michael Fatino were walking across the bridge just before 4 a.m. Tuesday when they approached the median. Police said Delong neared a barricade and somehow fell through a small hole that the barricade was covering. Fatino told police that at first he didn't know where Delong had gone, until he looked through the hole and found him below the bridge. Fatino went to Delong and said he found him conscious, but unable to speak.
Police said Fatino told them that he and Delong had been out drinking earlier in the evening, but hadn't consumed any alcohol for about two hours.
"We don't know why he fell through there," said Des Moines Police Sgt. David Coy. "There was a barricade in the median and he stepped close to the barricade and fell through the bridge."
Officials said that there's usually a grate that covers that hole in the bridge.
"It's dark out at 3 in the morning and it's very possible that he just missed what the barricade was there for and fell through," McCoy said.
City engineer Jeb Brewer said they will be looking into why the grate is missing. He said utility companies sometimes have to remove the grates to get to different utility lines, but he's not sure if that's what happened in this case.
He said he will be sending someone out to see if there needs to be more barricades in place.
There is no word on the extent of the man's injuries.
Police said the city will take a look at the bridge Tuesday to make sure the hole is sufficiently covered up.
Delong remains at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. http://ad.doubleclick.net/click;h=v...achannel.com/localexperts/4954070/detail.html<!--stopindex-->

Kruser, I'm really sorry to hear this. Man....in some ways this may be a far harder thing to deal with than death... I wouldn't begin to know any advice for you in this situation, but I am glad you feel able to let us know on this RX forum.

I hope you are able to comfort him as he adjusts to this..... God Bless. tulsa

Some things will be the same and that is you will still be friends with him. You will still be able to hang out with him and do things with him.

In the early stages of accidents the body sometimes protects itself by shutting down certain areas. After the healing begins the body "enables" these areas. Hopefully the diagnosis of paralysis will be wrong and he will be able to regain a good part of his functioning again. This does happen in these types injuries.

I just read where a guy was in a coma for 20 years and woke up because the nerve cells in his brain grew around his brain injury. Here's hoping your friend will not be as bad off as first diagnosed.

Man, that is horrible news. Support him in every way you can and realize the tough times he will go through. I don't wish that on anybody.

Kruser. I have a connection with power chairs, manual wheelchairs, home medical equipment, etc.

If this guy needs anything, which he will, look me up. I can get him whatever he needs.

He will be in rehab a long time sounds like but then they will start arranging things he will need at home when he goes.

If he is just waist down parapalegic I can get him manual wheelchairs, sporty chairs, etc.

Neck down there are may options also.

If i can help in any way, Let me know.

A good friend of mine got paralyzed about 3 years back in a car accident. I guess the only advice I can give from my experience is to be there for him and sympathize, but don't openly feel sorry for him and treat him like a charity case.

Hopefully it is not as bad as expected. My friend was initially paralyzed neck down, but as time went on he regained the use of this arms and hands.
