I know that this thread has been around before, but maybe someone who knows about electronics can help me. I am looking for a new TV, probably either a 46" or 50" HDTV. I dont know anything about televisions, so please someone help. Thanks in advance.

For that size DLP is a good choice. Just go to a store and say you are looking for a DLP and they will explain it to you. It is just a form of technology used. If the TV is under 40 inches then LCD is the best value. Above and DLP is generally the best value. Plasma is much improved, but the new plasmas are not as good a value.

For the size screen you are looking for you should be able to get a good quality DLP for around $2500.

Oh yes one other thing, don't think bigger is necessarily better. For any HDTV there is an optimal distance to watch it from. A 56 inch version means your optimal viewing distance is probably over 15 feet away. I have a 32 inch LCD which works perfect because the couch is about 8 feet away. If I go about 4 feet from the screen, it looses some of its crispness.

You may be able to do better than $2500 if you are willing to buy online...the 56 inch I just posted cost me ~$2100 last summer but now is $1650 online (plus ~$300 shipping) will be close to $2000 but still better than best buy, etc.

The only thing with DLP is that instead of being like 4 inches thick they are ~17 inches deep so you can't hang it on the wall if you have a small space...

good luck and enjoy!

SB-

The other guys explained the DLP thing...and I'm completely in agreement with these guys. WildBill said it best: if you're looking for a bigger TV, DLPs are the way to go. Friend of mine has one and it's beautiful. And what he said about the LCDs are right now; I have one and it's great, but not if you're going with a really big TV.

As for the Bash, it's still up in the air...dsethi needs to figure out if his bitchass can go, then I'll be able to figure out my plans. I doubt I'll go if he doesn't go.

Also might have to start a new job in August, but that'd be part-time, so we'll see.

I'm definitely trying to make it out, though.

thats overpriced for what you get

one of the new samsung plasmas that just came out 42 inch is 1899

or that samsung 56 dlp for 2 k as above

lcd tvs i have one but i dont find the blacks very black when watching movies unless the room is dark and i wouldnt recommend those

also a panasonic projector ae 900 is 1799 less 400 mail in rebate right now
so if that suits thats a very solid deal
thats a hi def projector

also this choice depends on what you will be viewing dvd / standard def / hi def tv

sony is overpriced/overrated and not discounted enough considering samsung and sony share production facilities these days

Samsung DLP best TV for the money. I have a 56" and it blows my buddies plasma out of the water at half the price. I bought it online and saved a bunch of cash.
