The manager isn't all to blame but if there is guy who is doing a worse job in MLB I would like know who it is. 38-47, find a team with as many talented players as the Phillies with that record. The pitching isn't bad and Tom Gordon is one of the best closers in baseball. The problem with the Phillies is the parts are greater than the whole. It's like Bluestar Airlines in the movie Wall Street. The airline was worth far more if it went out business. That's the Phillies. If they had a fire sale there are about 25 teams who would love to get their hands on several of the players. What's Tom Gordon worth to the Dodgers who lost Gagne. The Yankees would love to land any of the oufielders, Abreu, Burrell, Delluci. The Phillies need pitching prospects and a quality catcher. They are going to be a seller very soon. Steinbrenner, whats in your wallet???

I couldn't disagree more with this assessment of the Phillies. This team's pitching is mediocre at best (poor starters, average set-up men, and a quickly aging closing combination), they have no true leadoff hitter to get things started. Abreu has lost the pop in his bat and outside of Howard this team can't hit for power in a power hitters park. You have Utley and Burrell who can hit the long ball, but the rest of the team is not a threat at all. Only Utley and Abreu have been able to hit with RISP. They are hitting over .350 then you have Lieberthal at .286, then the rest of the team is sub .250. (Burrell at .205 - BLECH!) Add to this they have little team speed and are average defensively and there you have it. A team that is 9 games under .500

All that being said, still love going to CBP to take in games but I also know this team has no chance to do anything.

Their pitching isn't that bad???

They have 1 starting pitcher with an ERA under 5.00...and they are in the National League.

They have 2 pitchers on their entire roster with an ERA under 3.50 (Gordon and Rheal Cormier).

I think that is beyond bad.

The pitching is horrific. What staff are you watching?

When I say the pitching isn't bad I mean several of their pitchers have decent stuff. It's the mental attitude of the club. Lieber came back on Friday and pitched well. Hamels has the stuff to become a good pitcher but he's having problems right now. Corey Lidle pitches ok until the sixth inning. Brett Myers, if he can stop beating his wife is very talented.

I actually heard the pregame show a few weeks back and Manuel didn't even know Carl Crawford and Julio Lugo's names. This was after they had already played the DRays the night before and Lugo had 2 HR's. He said something like that LF and SS, whatever their names are, had pretty good games last night. He is a freakin idiot. Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu are bums.

Thursday's win marked No. 999 for Phillies manager Charlie Manuel in his career. He is on deck to become the 59th manager in major league history to win 1,000

Maybe he could smoke a Newport in the dugout as a celebration.

Charlie and RAJ both need to go for this team to start fresh. They're about to be mired in a run of mediocrity for the next 10 years if something doesn't happen relatively soon. Old roster, deteriorated skill sets, gutted farm system and horrible drafting over the last decade. Let's not forget some giant albatrosses of contracts. I miss Pat Gillick.
