In the Met game just now, Jacobs for the Marlins reaches over into the camera section, almost falls in and catches the foul ball for an out. As a result, the runner on first is awarded second by the umps.

The announcers pulled out the rule book and said: "if a player falls into the dugout or press box catching a foul ball, any runner on base will be awarded the next base".

Doesn't make sense why a runner should be allowed to advance for that.

It's a "catch and carry" rule...

If you catch the ball and run or fall into an area that in the ground rules is designated as "out of play", then when a player "catches" the ball and "carries" it into this designated "out of play" area, the play is now dead and the runners all advance one base...

So if a first baseman of a visiting team catches a foul ball and falls into the press box with the winning run on third, he just lost the game for his team?

If that stadium's ground rules designates that area as "out of play", yes, you are correct...

I have played amateur baseball for 20+ years and have been a player/manager, so I am very familiar with these rules, and I always told my 1B, 3B, LF & RF what the ground rules are for each park and I also would warn them about the situation that you just brought up if the game was tied in the last inning and we were the visiting team...I would tell them if there was any doubt about catching the ball and then carrying it into the "out of play" area, then let the ball drop and live to see another pitch...

Now I do not know if all 30 major league parks have uniform rules for the camera area being out of play, but for all parks that do, YES, with the scenario you mentioned in the 9th inning for the visiting team, it would be wise to let that ball fall harmlessly into the camera area rather than risk catching it and falling in if there is a guy on 3rd with less than 2 outs in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth...

No problem...

Division III where?...I played Division II baseball for probably the toughest Division II conference in the nation, the Sunshine Conference in Florida (now called the Sunshine State Conference, I believe)...I think they re-aligned, too, but when I played, the powerhouses were Florida Southern and Tampa (virtually every starter on both teams got drafted) and Tino Martinez played for Tampa the same time I played at Saint Leo and he hit 3 HRs against us in a doubleheader at our place...He was a stud...The only Division II player to make the Olympic Team that year...

Don't laugh. Hunter College in NY. Don't even think they have a baseball program anymore. It's been 20 years.

I graduated CCNY in 1950. At that time Hunter College was only for female students.
