When it quits do you stop dead on the highway ? Can you coast to the side of the road ? Is it dangerous ?

May be able to save he/she if you get to the hospital, instead of stopping on the side of the road

Turn those hazards on and DRIVE!!!!

If your car is moving, the velocity will continue until the friction against the motion slows the vehicle to a stop.

That's what happened when my friend blew his transmission. It didn't bother him that the engine was running at 8k RPMS, he just kept pushing it until it died.

That's what I was thinking. So in other words it would be like you shifted it into neutral, then it just rolls to a stop and wont go anymore ?

Something like a chain falling off a bicycle ?

No to Danny B. I know who he is, but have no opinion about the person.

Even if you shifted the car in reverse, the vehicle has forward velocity which will continue until the resistance from an opposite direction brings it to a halt over some distance. Force equals mass times acceleration. You must have an equal force to bring the car to a halt.

as long as it just won't stop cold. I just want to eke every last mile out ( 245k now).

Then I want to buy something about 2 years old with about 30k miles, instead of new. Should be able to get a much more expensive car that way, or at least a much better deal. Is that what most of you guys do ?

Just replace the transmission. It's alot cheaper then a 2 year old car and the license and registration, at least in California, won't eat you alive.

I'm not about to replace the Transmission, I don't see that as an alternative.

2000 Accord with 245 K miles. The car has served well, I'll take a few more miles, but then if you do the Transmission other things will go later and I fear I'd be pouring money into a car with low value.

There's property tax on cars where I live which is a good reason not to go brand new.
