A round-by-round account of the junior middleweight rematch between "Sugar" Shane Mosley (43-4, 37 KOs) and Fernando "Ferocious" Vargas (26-4) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas:

Round 1

The bell sounds and both fighters measure each other with extended left hands. Mosley starts off a little faster, moving around the ring. Mosley connects with a right midway into the round. Both fighters trade shots inside, but Mosley is quicker in landing his left jab. Mosley gets off several rights while holding Vargas. Vargas still studies Mosley, but Mosley starts out as the busier fighter.

Round 2

Vargas still comes out tentatively, while Mosley starts out scoring with his punches connecting. Vargas has yet to get off his shots, briefly tied up by Mosley. Both fighters tie each other up, and the referee steps in with words for both fighters. Mosley connects with a right, but not flush. The crowd chants "Mosley! Mosley!" Mosley lands a left jab and has a stare for Vargas at the end of the round.

Round 3

Mosley scores with a right quickly, and presses the attack to the point of stumbling past Vargas. Vargas counters, but Mosley gets the better of the exchange. Both fighters engage in holding, but the referee quickly separates them. Vargas connects with a body shot. Vargas is getting more aggressive, but Mosley is peppering Vargas at will with his left jab. Mosley scores with a right. Vargas lands a left jab, then a left hook. Mosley works in a body shot to back Vargas off. Now Mosley measures Vargas with his left jab, then comes in with a combination to the body.

Round 4

Mosley is beating Vargas to the punch, delivering combinations. Vargas pursues Mosley, but is still looking for an opening. Mosley is fighting his fight, keeping his distance, landing 1-2s. Mosley lands a left. Vargas seems to be settling in, giving pursuit, but not throwing as many punches. Vargas gets in a right to the body. Mosley lands a hard right as the bell sounds.

Round 5

Mosley is in command as Vargas strides toward him. Mosley lands a combanation between clinches. Mosley grimaces after a head butt. Vargas scores with a jab, but Mosley retaliates. Mosley scores with a right. Vargas' right eye is bleeding, prompting the referee to get it addressed. Mosley unleashes with a flurry in the final seconds of the round.

Round 6

Vargas, exhorted by his trainger to win rounds, comes out looking to fire, but Mosley is too quick, and lands his left jab at will. Mosley and Vargas clinch, then are separated. Mosley scores with his left jab. Vargas' left jab is blocked. Mosley is cobra-quick, staring and firing his left. Vargas counters with a left. Mosley puts Vargas flat on his back with a devastating left in the final minute of the round. Action resumes, Mosley goes in to finish it. The fight is stopped.

Sugar Shane Mosley wins by TKO at 2:38 seconds of the sixth round.
