Strange ending to Pirates game

Pirates won last night in the bottom of the ninth 7-6. I was listening to the game and here is how it ended:

Tie score 6-6 - Pirates have bases loaded, 1 out, bottom of ninth. Pirate batter, Paulino, hits a drive to right center over everyone's head, that bounces over the wall. Normally this is a ground rule double and 2 runs would score, right? Except Paulino gets to first base and then runs to the dugout - credited with only a single and only one run scores!

Saw this happen once before with a walk off homer with a man on, batter got mobbed after third base, never touched home, credited with a triple and only one run scored.

Maybe it only matter to run line bettors.

I am not sure it would have mattered? I have never seen a team score more then the winning run in the bottom of the ninth unless it is a homerun. Don't know the rule though.

It only counts as one run...

In the playoff game the home run would have counted had Robin Ventura ran the bases.

I saw it (the MLB package is on free this weekend). Under those circumstances, the ball has to be hit over the fence on a fly for any chance at extra bases. A ground-rule double is always a scored as a single when the runner on third is the winning run.

He hit the ball well. As the camera focused on right center, I thought it might have a chance. It bounced half way up the warning track. When it was hit, the outfielders never moved.

IMO, the runline was lost when Ian Snell struggled with his control, as well as, the Pirates letting Astacio of the hook in the early innings.

If Paulino would have continued to run and touched 2nd base and the runner from 2nd base touches home plate, 2 runs would have scored and the final would have been 8-6 and paulino would have been credited with a book rule double.

That is not correct .Only one run can score unless it is a home run.

I wonder if this counts as another way to reach first base safely?

I stand corrected.

GAME-ENDING HITS
(f) Subject to the provisions of 10.07 (g), when the batter ends a game with a safe hit which drives in as many runs as are necessary to put his team in the lead, he shall be credited with only as many bases on his hit as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run, and then only if the batter runs out his hit for as many bases as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run. NOTE: Apply this rule even when the batter is theoretically entitled to more bases because of being awarded an “automatic” extra-base hit under various provisions of Playing Rules 6.09 and 7.05. (g) When the batter ends a game with a home run hit out of the playing field, he and any runners on base are entitled to score.
