I do not mean with other charges (Drug dealing, guns, etc). Has any person simply placing wagers online ever been arrested for doing so? If so was he found guilty?

Likewise, has any person ever been arrested for advertising online gambling or running affiliate links on a website? If so, was he found guilty?

Yes there has been. I remember reading a story about a car salesmen in North Dakota that got pinched when he tried to HONESTLY report his taxable income. He filed himself as a professional gambler since he was making more money off of gambling than as a salesmen. Well the red flags went up and he was investigated. If I can remember correctly I believe he had to pay a fine of which I can't remember how much it was. He is the only one that I have ever heard of. I will try to find the article.

That is the only one I have ever heard of and I believe it was a state law that he was arrested under and if I recall, he paid $250.

If I also recall correctly, they really did not want to take it to trial, but he opted to pay the fine rather than see what happens...

I know that he paid the fine for some wierd law in North Dakota. Well he must of had enough to cover the small fine. He is the only one that I have ever heard of though. When you think about the millions of people that bet from the US each year....one getting pinched is amazing.

He was some guy who was very good at predicting line movement - it very much bothered Dakota that he could consistently win... he had no clue he was doing anything wrong.

I don't know Doug - I will be in vegas the last weekend of July. If I lose the farm, I wont be back in August. If I win the farm, I might still be there... I've only made my return flight once on time. I can never plan more than a week or two in advance... I have an invite to some The Devil Made Me Do It party at the palms the weekend of the bash, so I may head out that way. I also have an invite to Atlantis that weekend so it kind of depends on which chickes pull me which direction. I will probably try to come to Vegas...

I know a guy who had his house searched, computers seized, and accounts frozen by state gaming agents. He was never charged with a crime. He eventually got most of his stuff back. He spent like 20 grand on lawyers though.

Was he suspected of being a bookie?

yes, but he wasn't. evidently they found that out when they inspected his records on the hard drives. They came in a black van with dark suits and search and seizure warrant in hand. They were not very cooperative and insisted he was involved in illegal activity. He was shocked to say the least and did not recover his stuff until the 3 year statute on filing charges elapsed. Of course all the computers were worthless by then.

JC told the story(not sure if it was here at the Rx or another forum) about a guy in prison with him who was there because he made sports bets. The feds got him on charges of bookmaking but JC claims he was only betting. I am inclined to believe this guy as I don't put it past our govt to do anything at this point in time!

I also read about the proceeding against Jeff Traumann in North Dakota. That is the only case that any of us really have to worry about.

there are TONS of other cases where somoene steals money or writes bad checks, and they get the book thrown at them, including "illegal gambling". In everyone one of those cases, they plead guilty to check fraud/embezzlement/theft, and the gambling charges are dismissed.

Yes.

Once in 1976 and then in 1987.
Was in involved in a 5-7 people betting a HUGE bookmaker both times.
Conspriacy they tried to prove. They wre not succesful. Spend about 20k on first charge for layers and about 35k on the next one.
One cant be TOOOOOOOOOO careful these days.
One can get caught up in ALL kinds of things.

YOU will be gulity until you prove Yourself innocnet too! Just like ANYTIME that you are arrested, for anything.
