The president of a Miami Gardens direct-mailing firm, his two children and a nephew are facing a federal indictment charging them with aiding an illegal multibillion-dollar offshore bookmaker, BetonSports.com.
The four are among 11 people indicted by a federal grand jury in Bay St. Louis, Miss., as participants in a long-standing sports betting operation based in San José, Costa Rica that targets U.S. gamblers.
''Illegal commercial gambling across state and international borders is a crime,'' said U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway of the Eastern District of Missouri in a statement.
The four South Floridians named in the indictment, which was unsealed Monday, are:
William Hernan Lenis, president of DME; his son, William Luis Lenis, 26, vice president/print buyer; his daughter, Monica Lenis, 27, and nephew Manny Gustavo Lenis, 27. William L. Lenis and Manny Lenis are under arrest in Miami.
Arrest warrants have been issued for the others, according to the Department of Justice.
Three companies owned by Lenis are named: DME Global Marketing and Fulfillment, Direct Mail Expertise and Mobile Promotions.
Founded by William H. Lenis more than two decades ago, DME is based in a 60,000-square-feet warehouse in Miami Gardens that was bought for $585,000 in 1989.
The company offers direct marketing services for clients, such as managing databases of addresses, printing fliers and labels and mailing the advertisements.
Phone messages left at DME's office on Tuesday were not returned.
According to the indictment, the Lenises provided ancillary business services to the bookmaking operation.
In 2003 and 2004, they performed advertising and promotional services to BetonSports.com in 2003 and 2004 for a total of $152,000.
Additionally, the Lenises mailed brochures, magazines, fliers and coupons to St. Louis ``for the purpose of executing and attempting to execute the scheme to defraud.''
They also sent laptop computers and software to St. Louis for use in the operation for which they are charged with interstate transportation of gambling paraphernalia, the indictment states.
Miami-Dade County records show that the company is in arrears for two years of property taxes, totaling $86,612, and that the Miami Gardens property is appraised at $1.7 million.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
