Many Las Vegas residents scamper off toward San Diego to escape the summer heat during this time of year. Many hunker down in the vicinity of the Del Mar racetrack. By all accounts, the Del Mar race meet is the leading California attraction for folks working in the Las Vegas hospitality industry.

Probably my favorite place to spend a summer is Del Mar where the turf meets the surf. Have nothing but wonderful memories of the many times I have spent time there. Still always an outside chance I could move to the North San Diego County area for my golden years. Simply beautiful.

I'm off to where the surf meets the turf next week...can't wait, but until then, I'll just bet Delmar in one of the Vegas books!

One of the few tracks where theres actually attractive women, I do have a problem with the $6 beers though. FVCK could I go for a king cut of prime rib from Bullies right after the late double

Is SAM ANGEL still alive?

If so, sure he will be there.

Sam Angel, the most storied of the Runyonesque characters in modern Las Vegas, was a fixture at Del Mar for many years before wearing out his welcome.
Generous with his flask, the resourceful Angel was tolerated by the management of Del Mar when the items he had for sale – rings, watches, etc. – were harbored in his clothing. They drew the line and booted him when he branched into selling tee shirts featuring a portrait of the great racehorse Cigar.

I went to about three opening days at Del Mar with Sam. A real character.
