(BBC News)

A new panel is to investigate whether US restrictions on internet gambling breach world trade rules.

US laws banning interstate betting over the internet will be examined by the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Caribbean state of Antigua and Barbuda, host to many online casinos, has been in a long-running battle with the US over the legality of its stance.

The WTO earlier found that some of the US laws were not in line with trade rules, though others were permissible.

The Antiguan authorities asked for the panel to be set up after negotiations with the US broke down.

The panel has 90 days to report on how the US is complying with earlier WTO rulings.

Trade partners who fail to implement WTO rulings often find themselves hit by sanctions - for example, extra tariffs on their exports.

Turmoil

Antigua and Barbuda says the prohibitions are hampering the country's economy.

It has invested heavily in the industry in a bid to lessen its reliance on the tourism sector.

It says three US laws are preventing companies from legally accepting bets from the US.

The WTO announcement comes during a week of turmoil for the online gambling industry, after the boss of Betonsports was detained in the US on charges of racketeering.

Chief executive David Carruthers, 48, was named in an indictment in Missouri after an investigation into online gaming.

The news sent shockwaves through the industry and sent share prices plummeting.

Somebody bigger, like the UK (hint hint) needs to step up and fight the US on this. It's all well and good that Antigua lost, but trade sanctions against the US will do bupkus. We need a much bigger player, one who can impose sanctions that will actually have an effect.

That, and American voters could start pretending like they give a shit about personal freedoms.

Wait. What forum is this??

I think in the end this will backfire on the U.S. and online gambling will become stronger than ever.

I think Journey is right too...

Here's the conversation:

King or Primeminister or whatever from Antigua calls up President of Costa Rica. They discuss BOS and WTO.

The two of them call up Blair in England and say WTF! First the US grabs 3 of your bankers who may have broken a law. Now they grab a CEO of a public London company who broke no laws. The WTO has already ruled in our favor. Will you support us and the WTO in forcing the US to allow this enterprise.

British public already pissed off.

WTO and Antigua gets UK support.

Now the US has a big decision to make...

Backfire might not be the correct term , but why would the UK govt stand by and let this go down, it would seem to be in their best interest .

It still amazes me that anyone would believe this. To say that Gary Kaplan and BOS did not break any laws is the most laughable thing I have read.

I agree that online gaming would not be considered breaking the law...but you must be ignoring all of their other business tactics.

Kaplan yes, but what did Carruthers do besides run his mouth and associate with the scum. I think they are arresting people left and right to get to the main guy, and that'd be Kaplan.

Kaplan isn't under indictment for stealing players' money. He's under indictment primarily for advertising and marketing activity promoting gambling over the phone and internet.

This isn't going to happen with Tony "Poopy Nose" Blair at the helm. They haven't even begun to raise hell yet over the extradition treaty ratified by Britain that is allowing British nationals to be brought to the US, while the same treaty has yet to be ratified by the US in kind. Blair is a major league wimp when it comes to standing up to the US. I can't see him risking all the ass-kissing he's done over the past five years in order to protect the arse of a gambling giant.
