Im from ny and im looking to move out to the california area. Im sick of the winters around here and the damn humidity in the summer. How is the weather in sanfran and oakland. Im a 60 degree kind of guy and i believe that is what the weather is like out there becuase of being so close to the water. My main question is i know san fran is really expensive. How much does one have to make to live there. I basically just graduated college and have a bachelors in computers so i should be able to get a decent job out there. Im not sure i want to live directly in san fran does anyone know of a good part of town where it is pretty safe and apartment prices arent to expensive. Just looking for some feedback

Probably a bad time to ask....I think it was just 95 there with the power out on & off due to the power grid being overloaded. I'm sure Oldmanted can fill you in.

Based upon the prices I saw while in San Jose a few months ago, all I can say is that you may want to look elsewhere.

I lived in the city for over 20 years but moved 20 years ago. I doubt if the weather has changed. I still own real estate in the Bay Area so I still know what's happening. The weather in the city is in the 60's and overcast most of the time. Mark Twain said that the coldest winter he ever had was a summer in SF. The east part of the city is warmer and the overcast burns off more often. The spring is kind of nice and you can expect 10 days of 80's-90's in Sept. or Oct. Rainy season is from Oct to March and can get down into the 40's during the winter. Wind and fog is a problem year round. Oakland is pretty much the same but can get warmer. Once you get away from the city a few miles, north, south, or east, the weather warms up and you and the suns shines. The farther away, the warmer it gets.

The Bay Area is very expensive. SF has the highest housing costs in the country. I own a dumpy 950 sq ft house in San Ramon which is 45 miles east of SF and it's worth about 600k. And this is an older house is the worst part of San Ramon.

I was born and raised in San Francisco and lived and worked here my whole life accept for 1 year out of state. The weather has changed over time, but basically you can expect the following: Winter: 50's Spring: 60's Summer: 60's & 70's Fall: 60's & 70's. That being said, we do have a current heat wave where the temperatures have been in the 90's. However, the humidity is moderate. Oakland is a bit warmer as it is futher from the Pacific Ocean. The entire Bay Area is much larger and temperatures range up to triple digits further inland in the summer and 30's and 40's in the winter. No snow except on the mountain tops. Rain off and on from November through March/April although this year we had 41 of 45 straight days of rain in March/April.

As for housing, the Bay Area is the most expensive place to live in the country. If you wanted to live in SF, you could not find an apartment in a decent neighborhood for less then at least $1500 to $2000 per month and I may be low on that as I am long in the tooth and have owned my home for many years. Renting a home is definitely in the $3000 and up range. The only way to reduce that cost is to move inland to the East Bay. The North and South Bay are very similiar in cost. As for houses, the average median price home sells for over $600,000. You asked about salaries and my only guideline to you is that 6 figures is very common here but not for new graduates. Silicon Valley is loaded with computer graduates. How much you need to live on will depend on your overall expenses. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
