Splitting hairs with this question as both were incredible, but if you had to award the games all time best closer who would you give it to?

cant say either is better than the other...clearly Ecks best year closing was better than Rivera's though.

After Erickersly gave up the home run to Kirk Gibson in the 89 World Series and the LA Dodgers went on to win the series, he became the most HATED relief pitcher of ALL times in my books. That pitch changed history in my life.....I HATE that guy.

I've never seen a pitcher like Eck who in his prime could seemingly throw the ball exactly where he wanted. With movement.

he really did have the most ridiculous control of all time IMO...the plate could have been the size of a match book and Eckersley would have still walked very few.

rivera is better in my book. Eck was great, but MO is the clutchest pitcher of all time. The one big hit he gave up in the world series was a bloop. Eck gave up the gibson HR. That is a big difference.

Rivera gave up a grand slam and the Sox came from way behind to beat the Yankees in Fenway in the regular season....Was it Trot Nixon, I cannot reemember who it was ?

That HR ignited a Red Sox team that was dead in the water...From that point on that Boston team never quit on anything.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one, Rivera has played for a winner much longer than Eck did...plus Eckersley did not start closing til age 33.

If Eckersley started his career as a closer he would have put that save record out there on the same field with Cy Young's 511 wins.

Rivera's the best ever.

As of today, Lee Smith has appeared in 314 more relief situations..that said, Mo's only 76 saves away from having the most ever!

Hope he get's to 479,before he hangs up his cleats. :103631605
