McClain was washed up shortly after that....injuries ruined his career, he was 17-34 and out of baseball by age 28.

He had won 108 games in the five year period prior to the injury.

Who the hell did someone else vote for the NL MVP in 1968 besides Gibson?

Thanks J-Man, Rose had a good season but only 49 RBI's!!!!! Whereas, 1.12 is in the pantheon of pitching stats like 511, 7, and 59

take a look at the AL MVP voting in 1968, that is not an impressive list of the games best! No wonder the National League was dominant!

4 Tigers in the top 7 and Dick Mcauliffe finished 7th with a .259 BA...

Jesus, with that creampuff list how did Yaz finish 9th, he was the only guy to hit .300 that year in the AL it looks like. But now I can see why McLain was unanimous.

I like that word 'pantheon' :103631605

Ironically it was the same season McClain did his thing in the A.L. , also the year the mound was raised.

wow ... baseball was awesome in the late 60's and 70's

some great names on those lists ..

the thing about that time period, you could name all the players each team had...the starters were fixtures for years...I can still name entire infields from most of those teams....players just didn't move around....Tigers were a pesky team, not a grteat team but they had a lot of good hardnosed players....remember Aurelio Rodriguez who had a great arm at 3B....Mickey Stanley, Gates Brown, Horton, Kaline of course...Kaline who finished with 399 homers I believe, and he had a handful rained out.

that is so true..

we used to camp alot during the summers with several families when i was age 10 to 15 . me and another boy the same age could name every starting player and rotations for every team..

he and i would play catch for hours and hours on those trips...

aurelio was known for 2 things .. his black glove and the cannon strapped to his right shoulder.
