The Milwaukee Brewers are trading slugger Carlos Lee to the Texas Rangers as part of a multiplayer deal, ESPN.com learned Friday.
The Brewers are sending Lee, minor league outfield prospect Nelson Cruz to the Rangers for relief pitcher Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix.
Lee, who can become a free agent after this season, is hitting .286 with 28 home runs and 81 RBI. He is a .284 career hitter over eight seasons with the White Sox (1999-2004) and Brewers (2005-06).

The Rangers (51-51) would still like to add another starting pitcher, but couldn't pass up the chance to add Lee as they strive for their first playoff appearance since 1999. Texas went into Friday's game against Kansas City in third place in the AL West, but only two games behind division-leading Oakland.

Cordero was the Rangers' closer until he set a major league record with five blown saves in April, and was replaced in that role by Akinori Otsuka. In his last appearance for Texas, Cordero allowed four runs in the eighth inning against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The right-hander was 7-4 with six saves and a 4.81 ERA in 49 appearances.

Mench is hitting .284 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. Nix has been in the minor leagues since batting .094 (3-for-32) in nine games in April.

Both teams are checking for any medical issues before consummating the deal.

I like the Brewers side myself.

That being said, I still think Texas is the choice to win the west.

From a per player perspective, I think Texas is getting the better deal.

But the fact that Milwaukee offered Lee a $48 million new deal and he turned it down showed he was not going to resign so it is a great move for them to get something for him before he walked at the end of the season.

As a long time Clippers fan, nothing would piss me off more than watching players walk at the end of the season when you knew they were not going to resign with us. At least trade them for cash or a draft pick...GET SOMETHING!

This is a trade where Texas not only got "something", they received quality players that can help them win games.

Great trade for both teams in my opinion.

Now what exactly does Milwaukee plan on doing with Derrick Turnbow and all that money they just gave him.

I would say it was a good trade from both teams, aside from the fact, I don't think Milwaukee should have packaged Cruz in the deal. No reason to give up a pretty good power/speed combo prospect in any deal.

Ace-He is still the closer, but adding another pretty good arm in the pen is always nice.

I like NIX a lot also, I think he is going to be pretty servicable at some point

the question is what did Milwaukee get out of this for the future? Not saying they where going to get Lee to re-sign so anything i better than nothing but dam you would think they would get some young talent to build with.

Not sure I really like this deal from Milwaukee's perspective. Yes they probably needed to deal lee now that they are likely out of the Wild Card hunt but damn, they should have gotten more bullpen help than Nix. They are very deep in the outfield. And I agree, they should have kept Cruz. We'll see how this plays out.

He turned it down because he wanted a 5 year deal instead of a 4 year deal. The Brewers didn't think he could last 5 years at least in the field, and obviously that's a problem in the NL. Supposedly he really did want to stay though.

It almost looks like they gave up on Lee but still want to make a wildcard run this year.

If he really wanted to stay, $48 million would have been plenty. Bitching over an extra year at that kind of money doesn't show he wanted to stay.
