Phillies expected to deal Abreu to Yanks

The Bobby Abreu trade is likely to happen Sunday, and the Phillies are expected to send the right fielder to the Yankees — even though the Red Sox are still in the mix — FOXSports.com has learned.

The Yankees would get Abreu and right-hander Cory Lidle in their proposed deal, while the Red Sox are negotiating only for Abreu. However, the Sox are working on several other fronts, and their primary motivation apparently is to muddle matters for the Yankees, according to a source close to the talks.

Abreu, 32, has given assurances that he will waive his no-trade clause for the Yankees, presumably in exchange for the exercising of his $16 million option for 2008. But due to the large amount of paperwork involved, a resolution likely is necessary by Sunday to ensure that the trade is completed by Monday's 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline.

The Abreu deal with the Yankees, if completed, likely would be perceived as a massive salary dump by the Phillies. Neither of the Yankees' top prospects, Class AA right-hander Philip Hughes nor Class A outfielder Jose Tabata, will be included in the trade.

The Phillies are expected to move several other players in addition to Abreu, including right-handed starter Jon Lieber and left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes. They have been unable to find a taker for left fielder Pat Burrell, who, like Abreu, has a large salary and no-trade clause.

If the Phillies trade Abreu, they are likely to keep outfielder David Dellucci, then attempt to re-sign him as a free agent.

Dellucci, batting .311 in a reserve role, has been the Philadelphia player most in demand on the trade market due to his pending free agency and modest $950,000 salary.

The Phillies' motivations for trading Abreu and others would be to change their chemistry and gain significant financial flexibility.

During his tenure with the Mariners, Phillies general manager Pat Gillick traded outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. after the 1999 season and lost shortstop Alex Rodriguez as a free agent the following year.

Gillick kept the team strong by reallocating the team's resources, gaining the rights to Japanese right fielder Ichiro Suzuki and acquiring several lesser veterans, building the 2001 Mariners into a 116-win juggernaut.

according to Rotowire @ 1:30pm today...The Red Sox have joined the mix for Abreu. Nothing official yet

dicky- charlie manuel announced the other day that Burrell will start platooning w/ Delluci, w/ a double header today...I wouldnt assume its trade related. He has a no trade clause, and has said he'll only approve a Yanks or Red Sox trade..neither team has interest in him.

According to ESPN, the Yankees have reached a tentative deal to acquire Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle from the Phillies.

Abreu was just pulled from the Phillies' lineup for Sunday's game, adding confirmation that this is getting done.

as a Yankee fan...i've about reached my whits' end w/ over spending the market.

Abreu @ $16mill season for the next 3 years...is overspending the market by around $18 total million dollars. Thats fuckin sick & i'm tired of it. I seriously would prefer to see Bubba Crosby then a over market valued player w/ questions about his 'drive.' Seen that too many times before.

blah

agreed. let the young guys play -- they're doing fine.

Yanks would have NEVER been great in the late 90's without letting their farm guys develop into the core - DJ, Mo', Jorge, Bernie, etc ...

and i wouldnt be suprised...if the Yanks included Tabata, Duncan, or Hughes in the deal, because the Red Sox showed some interest in Abreu (ie: prolly made a single phone call).

Pat Gillick must be dancin right now.

classic...

"Buster Olney says it's tentatively done, but that the players going to Philadelphia haven't been decided yet. We suppose that'd be a problem if the Phillies weren't only focused on getting Abreu's salary off the books. Jayson Stark, who said last night that it'd likely be C.J. Henry and Steven White going to Philadelphia, now has it as Henry, left-hander Matt Smith and a player to be named later. Abreu was a late scratch from the Phillies' lineup for Sunday's game, adding confirmation that this is getting done."

Cashman/Steinbrenner/& Company...should the red flag go up, when you make a trade for a starting pitcher & all-star outfielder...and the team really doesnt want anything in return, just to take the money off their hands?

Maybe...just maybe...you're going to be over spending (dramatically). Has this philosophy been successful at all???? How soon we forget that a player like Paul O'Neil is more valuable than an Abreu type.

The reds dealt oneil to the yankees because they didnt want to deal with him anymore as well. ONeil was a grumpy player who was coming off a bad year. The reds wanted oneil to be more of a power guy and he rebelled.

In his last year in cinci oneil hit 246 with 14 HRs and 69 RBis in 148 games. Abreu has 65 RBIS already this year and is batting 277.

It is a common mistake to believe that everyone in NY wanted oneil over roberto kelly, when in fact many people thought kelly was going to be a better player than bernie williams and thought the trade would backfire.

PErsonally, i like abreu more than sheffield and would love for the yanks to get rid of that bum next year.

Good for the Phils....it ain't working so start over. I'd keep Utley and Howard and start over....although they should be pressing for better prospects.

Billy Wagner is having a good laugh.
