Is the boss always walking behind your desk in a not so subtle attempt to spy on what you are reading or doing? Does this cut into your RX surfing time?

I think I may need something like this for next semester. I'll be on campus and i don't think I can survive without sports betting/poker/casinos.

A good option is LogMeIn (www.logmein.com) or a similar service. You can log into your home PC from anywhere with an Internet connection. Great way to bypass content filters and the like. There are other similar services like GoToMyPC but I like LogMeIn cause its free for the basic service

I would not thing this works with a company firewall in place

Haha this is cool! I have a pretty good work environment but there are days that I feel like only web surfing. This will come in handy.

It really depends on the filter system they have in place. There's this chain of sandwich shops I go to occasionally called Panera Bread and they have content filters on their Internet. They filter any "gambling related" site but I have to problem bypassing it with LogMeIn. If a college campus is just trying to filter out offensive content he can probably use the service to get around it.

Can you imagine what the national average for workers using the internet to play instead of work is?

I wonder how much productivity is lost because of internet surfing , probably as high as 25%.

But with lost "productivity" comes a happier workforce. Having worked in a wide-open and also prison like environment, the people in the wide-open environment will be more willing to go the extra mile necessary at times in the business I was in. Turnover is also MUCH lower. So while you may lose a little short term, the long terms gains far outweigh them. If companies are concerned they don't have adults who can properly manage their time, they need to look at their hiring practices instead of instituting monitors.

A Growing Trend

Another survey, by Salary.com and America Online, demonstrates why employers are concerned, and why the trend of monitoring employee online time is likely to continue. The study shows that workers are spending 2.09 hours a day doing non-work related activities on the Internet. The survey has a lot of credibility -- because it is based on anonymous responses from 10,000 employees, nationally. The lost productivity bill is quite staggering at around US$759 billion a year.

I am not a ASS to my employee's but I let them know if I am paying them and they are doing personal stuff then that is called "stealing".

I work real hard to treat people the way I want to be treated. Of course it does not always work out that way. LOL So I show some grace but of you are on the net for more than 15 minutes on personal stuff then I draw the line. 2 Hours a day and you would be finding the door. WOW!!

You'd be amazed -- I've used it through many firewalls.

If it doesn't - a program like RADMIN slides through many firewalls if you use a port like 110 which is usually wide open for mail.

i took a job at kennedy space center the end of may. worked out there for 2 months and retired.

let me tell you about productivity lost ... their are about 20,000 people out there squeezing 30 minutes of work into 8 hours...

that is the largest group of do nothings i have ever seen...

they set records for wasting time...
