Pigeon racing is actually a semi-big deal in Europe...I don't know if anyone still bets on it but they did at one point. Back in the early to mid 1900's betting on pigeon racing was actually a pretty common thing...

Wow-I had no idea it was that big. I knew someone in high school who was into it. You wouldn't believe the crap he caught for paying hundreds of dollars for some "rat with wings" as we called them.

In the end, I'm not sure his deal wasn't just an excuse for a bunch of guys to sit around getting drunk waiting for the birds to come back.
