I mean that the BEST players Danny NEg and Phil Ivy, Hoyt corkins ..etc or ANYONE that is well known is really not there .

Does this PROVE that you need ALOT OF LUCK in a tourney this big and you need to catch CARDS early to build a stack?

if not Please explain...I think you can be the BEST bluffer or player in the world but if you are getting 2/7 offsuit all night your going home early

The field is just so big. To ask a pro player to beat out 8700 players in a tournament that spans 12 days, it's a lot to ask.

It took 6 days before the field was even playing together!

No, it once again shows that NL tournament poker is absolutely a high variance game. Throw almost 9,000 people into the mix and this is exactly what you'd expect to happen. High variance + the largest field in poker = lots of unknowns at the final 2 tables.

Perhaps some of these players are known in the poker/online community, but I can say I don't know them outside of Cunningham.

When you are down to 18 players out of nearly 8800, there is always a big luck factor involved.

I wouldn't take that nearly as far as saying that poker is mostly luck, but it's definitely a variable thrown into the mix when you are talking about reducing a field to 2/10ths of 1% of what it was to begin with.

Just like betting sports. Pick 1-5 games or so and your grandma could win a contest. Pick hundreds of thousands of games and now you start to seperate the good bettors from the bad, meaning if you played tournaments/cash games with this group of 8,000 or so, than the best players would end up eventually end up making money.

This examlpe is exactly why people crack me up when the look at something that goes 5-12 betting wise and says it's not profitable and give up.

1 time is mostly luck, hundreds of times and you can START to get an idea what to except and skill becomes more important.

..

..Actually; i think a mojor truth is being misseed: it is possible to become a very good player relatively quickly now; with the internet; much better books and teachers; and better acceptance of poker among intelligent, educated people...

I certainly agree that variance is high to start with in no limit holdem; and add on the greater number of players; which increases luck factor;

but

it is also true that the level of play of these 2-4 year internet players is much better than twenty years ago ; when no internet; very few quality books; and less acceptance by general public..

Steak, you got there before me. Allen already has 3 WSOP bracelets and now has a good chance to get the big one.

Its even more of a crap shoot now, since with over 8,000 entrants you expect the finalists to have survived several all-in 50:50 coin flips that would either eliminate or cripple them.

Ivey and company were pros when there were about 1000 people playing poker worldwide. Now there are 100 million. The pros are much better than the average players. The real difference is there are much more pros playing poker now.

Wish my Allen Cunningham to make Top Ten was for $100+ and not $10 to win $1100..wish my AC to win Main Event was for $100+ and not $1 to win $990.

But, still would be very grateful to win small as to cover horses already busted.

However, Ari Gold has a monster stack!

I said a lil quick prayer for AC last night, and he finally had a monster day, after grinding along..I hope he takes it down..but just Top 10 alone gets me back my WSOP Horse money..I would be grateful either way.

Woody, let's hope the cream rises to the top.

The best player has yet to hit the scene. Every generation is smarter than the next, and some kid at MIT will probably take center stage.

People have already said that Allen is easily one of the best 20 players in the world, no doubt. Others in the top 27, but not top 18, were Eric "Rizen" Lynch
(24th), Eric is the 2nd ranked online tourney player, Prahlad Friedman finished 20th, he is a huge name as well. Kevin O Donnell who finished 21st had 429k in career earnings coming in. Jeffrey Lisandro finished 17th, he won a WSOP Circuit for 542k in 2005 and had over a million in earnings before his wsop cash. Michael Binger had a 6 figure cash already this year at the WSOP. Don't be fooled, these are some very good players.

Well I didn't get sucked out on, just got put into a cooler.

I have a 30*22 room with a 3 seat bar with sink/fridge behind it. Pool Table. going to have a 50-60 inch TV, then 2 32 inch flatscreens wall mounted above it. 3 seperate DirecTVs going in, NFL Sunday is going to be fun this year!
