LONDON (Reuters) - British police said on Thursday they have thwarted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight, arresting a number of people in the London area.
Police said the aim of the plot was to detonate bombs smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
"A major terrorist plot to allegedly blow up aircraft in mid-flight has been disrupted in a joint, pre-planned, intelligence-led operation by the metropolitan police anti-terrorist branch and security services," a police spokesman said.
He said police believes that the intention was particularly to target flights from Britain to the United States.

Police had arrested an unspecified number of people in London during the night. He gave no further details."

Just heard on the radio that all flights leaving the UK are not allowing carry-on bags. All bags must be checked. I don't know if that includes their domestic flights or not.

Will carry-on bags be allowed on domestic US flights for the next week and a half?

I wish they'd ban carry-on bags permanently.

I get so tired of morons trying to jam giant sacks of worthless crap into overhead bins...bags that should have been checked in the first place.

I agree. Nothing more than a laptop size briefcase and something the size of a small book bag should be allowed as carry-on baggage.

The days of people dragging their entire closets on an airplane will not be missed.

Check in the golf clubs and wardrobes or leave them at home.

Can't even take laptops, mobile phones or ipods on UK flights currently. Further, the plot was to attack 6 planes simultaneously with chemical explosives mid-air between Heathrow/England and America (Sky News).

Further to that, Armed police have been stationed at all UK Sea ports.

"Had the plot succeeded it had the potential to be bigger than 9/11" (Sky)

This is just crazy.

Next week, when I go to the airport. They are going to look at me like I stole something because I am bringing a laptop on board.

Thanks Bush :howdy:

We've all been victims in the past and will continue to be in the future.

It's a shame.

Of course it will. It isn't unjustified either.

I was just speaking with some woman at the gym, we both discussed we have to fly soon and she wants to know "If things don't look right, can I get off the plane?" I said "Probably" But how do I know. And this was on the TV there and it will be on TV everywhere for days to come.

And why do these things always seem to involve Boston? Leave Beantown alone :finger:

El Diablo, you are right. I cut my drinking back lately but I will start drinking the moment after I check in. Well, at least I am going earlier this year so I can sober back up for the weekend. :toast:

You should thank Bush that these terrorists haven't attacked American soil since 9/11.

If Dole or Kerry were in office, they'd both be cowering under their desks like the nancy-boy, panty waists that they are.

billhill, you might very well be right. Not saying I agree, but that is not important.

I apologize for the remark. I don't want this to be a political discussion.

Anyone who has to fly, I'm sure we are more concerned about having a nice smooth flight, not who is in office.

I hope they still allow you to bring a laptop bag on board. No chance I want them to process 2k computer with the other luggage.

+ laptop is nice to have on a plane during long trips...

It was pretty intricate from what I gather. I don't even have my TV on. I just don't even want to know. My curiousity will get the better of me eventually, I'm sure.

I need to bring hydrogen peroxide for my ear. I mean what the hell. They're going to think it's plutonium or something.

WTF is wrong with you people?

If you want to thank someone thank the religion of peace, Muslims. Until you realize this you are in denial.
