What's it like ? I know it shares the island with Haiti. Step-daughter going soon. Prime hurricane area, right ?

safe ?

no passport seems needed, but advisable, probably too late to get one anyway.

I think any US citizen traveling outside the US must have a passport regardless, but I am not positive about this. You might want to double check.

All nationalities require a valid passport (except nationals of Canada and the USA staying up to 90 days only need holding appropriate ID such as a Birth Certificate and a Driver's Licence which proves citizenship and nationals of Germany holding a National Identity Card).

You need a passport. The days of DL only are long gone. I believe you can still come back from Canada with a certified birth cert and DL, but that ends either this year or next too...

DR is a nice place from what i have heard. I have also heard it is not that safe off the resorts. I would recommend she stay on the resorts and doesn't get too drunk unless she is with someone she trusts...

She's not a drinker, going with one other girl. Travel agent said no PP needed. I found some website that said its preferred but not absolutely necessary, but she leaves in less than two weeks. Is that enough time to get one ?

a sankie is a dominican tigre who usually works at a resort as a bartender, waiter, or most likely part of the animation team.

over the last few years western women has been going in droves just to have sex with these guys so they have become very aggressive towards gringas

if your stepdaughter has any issues with her weight or doesnt seem to attract alot of guys at home, these guys will spot it in an instant and take advantage.

after they get the girl hooked because they are such great dancers and probably fvck them like no one else, they will start with the stories of the sick grandmother, or they want to go back to school and make a better life for themselves but unfortunately they dont have enough money.

however the ultimate goal is a visa to the united states.

you'd be amazed at how many women send these guys western unions every month and the best ones have multiple women.

which part of the country is she headed? ive been everywhere except punta cana as i dont really like that type of place

not sure, some resort. Wherever it is tourists go to. I'd pick one of the more mainstream countries if I were going.

Doug, if you leave this country without a passport these days, you are a fool.

I had my passport stolen coming back from Australia (I went to sleep and some guy with no visa swiped it)

It took me about 8 hours and my certified birth certificate to get back into the country.

Thankfully the other guy got arrested and I got my passport back the next day.

My mom always said travel with your passport and your certified birth certificate (One on you and one in your laptop bag.) I agree.

You can get a passport overnight - it costs like an extra $150. Look online on google for expediated passports.

Better yet, there are a few cities where you can walk in and get one immediately. I am pretty sure they are NYC, DC, and maybe Chicago and LA. I think you are near NYC, might be worth looking into.

TT, that is what the law says, but many airlines won't let you board to go to the Bahamas without a passport - they just dont want to deal with it. Make sure she calls the airline if she doesnt have it. I know several people who did not go to the Bahamas with me because they called the airline and were told too bad. Maybe the person at the airline was wrong, but in this day and age, I think it is worth having the passport.

Wow. They've added a lot of agencies... 4 years ago when I went to Australia and had lost mine, my choices were NYC and DC. I paid some company in NYC to take my documents for me and overnight the passport to me.

This is good - as things are getting stricter at least it is easier to get a passport.

It's a place called " Breezes", but there are two of them, not sure which one she is going to.

Their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square.

I'm going in November for 2 weeks-staying at Paradisus in Punta Cana.
Had some friends go on a couple of occasions this summer and loved it.
I think the idea here is to stay at a nice resort-and pretty much stay there 90% of the time as this place is ultra poor.

yeah there are two of them. one in punta cana and the other in puerto plata.

most people say the one in punta cana is nicer and they definitely have a better beach.

since im not very familiar with the east coast i cant really speak of that except if the girls get restless midweek they should take a tour to isla saona which could be the nicest place in the DR.

if they are going to puerto plata and are outdoorsey types, the best tour is a trip to damajagua Falls.

also the breezes in POP has a shuttle to the neighboring towns of sosua and cabarete. i highly recommend they get off that resort and have a little adverture as both towns have a unique flavor.

let me know if its puerto plata as i have a small beach bar not too far away that my girlfriend runs in the summer and they can take the shuttle there for a visit with a few drinks on the house and meet some good dominican peeps.

just some random info:

all us bank cards will work there.

when off the resort obviously dont wear any expensive jewlery especially gold.

there are 3 police forces (polica na, amet, politur) and if she has any trouble she should go to the politur which is the tourist police

if the other girl is a rum drinker barcelo is much better than brugal.

im sure they'll have a great time and if they decide to leave the resort it would be a good idea to be back before dark as they are in unfamiliar territory and even i was attacked on my motorcycle when i made a few wrong turns and ended up in a place i shouldnt have been around midnight

Gheez i hope I never have some of you guys for a travel agent. Why would anyone travel 3,000 miles in the middle of summer to hang around American and Canadien tourists 24/7.

Doug,

Make sure your daughter does herself a favor and get out and take in some of the Dominican culture. I'm sure Breezes has very good tour guides who will show them some of the fun local spots. Breezes is a top notch resort chain but the food is very average and your not going to find any good local food there.

Not sure of the breezes locations in the D.R but if a visit to Santo Domingo is a option tell her to do it. Like any big city you must keep your wits about you and again a guide an a small group is recomended. The city is loaded with history and culture and some of the best restaurants I've ever been too.

It would be a shame to visit a place that you may never see again and sit around a resort the whole time.
