been house shopping the past week and have found a few homes that I would love to live in the next 10-15 years but they ALL have rules on fences.

I knew this was true but I mean almost all of them have this rule here in Michigan. It's ruining everything for me.

One I want it for my own privacy and two (most importantly) my dogs, I just can't imagine them being able to see other dogs/people without acting like idiots. Has anyone ever trained an older dog with a bark collar? Just seems a tad cruel to me.

Is this common (no fence policy) most places nowadays

I've got an invicible fence for my dogs.

They bark. If people don't like it, they can move somewhere like N.Dakota where there are no dogs near ya.

Sean, you sound like my neighbors.

Let's buy a dog & then leave in the backyard to bark all day & night while we sit inside with the AC on and the doors closed.

Some of my neighbors deserve to be chained up in their backyards.

I don't leave them outside all the time, but they do bark occasionally. They only bark when other dogs come by, so I figure they are only 50% of the problem.

Since I get up at about noon and only leave them outside in the day time, I've yet to have a complaint...

In order to judge for myself the cruelty level of this device, i was at a party and the people had one on their dog, i didn't believe it provided much of a jolt so i gave it a try by holding it in my hand and approaching the end of the yard........Needless to say i have yet to try that brilliant stunt again, thing almost made me piss in my pants.

My retarded neighbors are a mixed batch. Let's see...there is the dog that gets bored & cries\howls every night, there are the idiots that leave them out all night & let them bark at everything in sight, and of course there are 2-3 that let their dogs out between 5-6am so they can run to their fences & start world war f'ing III with the dogs on the other side of it.

Guys don't get me wrong. My dogs live indoors and are beyond spoiled (In my bed right now waiting for me and I won't kick them off). I meant they like to go outside when I am home and go ballistic at the sight of another dog.

My dogs are not only like childern to me they are my best friends!!

I am a fence contractor in Wisconsin. Newer subdivisions have these restrictive covenants to help them sell their lots. Usually pertain to fences, sheds, boats, motorhomes and such. Many consider these eye sores. You can lobby to the city and the board of the development committee for a variance. This can help you with special circumstances.

The covenants usually last 7 years. Check with the developers before you consider buying.

I think the main reason for the "no fence" policy is the lots are so small in most subdivisions that a fence makes them look even smaller. I lot of subdivisions have a no fence policy just in the front yard and maybe a "type" restriction on a backyard fence.

Ice I know in cities like West Bloomfield and alike. They have no fences becuase you don't realy own all the property and it's basically like common ground

Ice, I was in the same situation when I bought my last house 2 or 3 years ago. The house I bought did not have an acceptable place for a fence in the back and the had strict regulations on fence types and heights in front. I ended up getting an aluminum fence around my front yard. It actually looks like Iron but no rusting or no maintainance work. Its a good bit more than a chain link or a privacy fence, but it does look good and it was accepted in my neighbor hood. Keeps my Golden retreiver at home.

Down here in Houston all new houses have fences...from what I can tell I have never heard of such restrictions here in Houston. The only one know of is the fence height...they want them all the same height.

My sub division does not allow fences. I like it that way .. Fences would deffinately be an eye sore. Down in Austin Texas where my sister in law lives all the houses have fences. In my opinion it does not look nearly as nice. We still have our privacy. It just ends up costing more money as you have to spen a lot of money on bushes and other landscaping.

Only black rail fences are permitted where I live. No privacy (which is fine with me), but the freakin' dogs behind my house are corralled. I like the rule--a lot better than my old subdivision where everyone had a privacy fence.

My subdivision requires fences and gates. I bought a house that had no gates. A few months in they sent warnings stating I needed gates. I found out not only did I have to have gates, but I had to have an architectural design for them! To make it even more laughable, they sent me a list of 3 architects who would do it. What are the chances they are family members of the board? I said that has to be BS, the house was 5 years old when I bought it and the prior owners all blew off the gate requirement. I haven't bothered to put up gates since and they haven't bothered me with it for over a year. I am just going to put up two Home Depot gates soon and figure they probably will forget about the stupid architectural design committee.
