Remember the Dealers?

By: Dan Michalski – August 11, 2006

So I had a conversation with some dealers a few minutes ago -- I'm guessing I won't be the first one to report that the World Series is over -- and they were all clearly hoping Jamie Gold would win. Why?
Because he reportedly promised to tip $1 million if he won. (He did. Win that is. Tip still pending.) To the dealers, that meant about an extra $2,000 each.
Phil Hellmuth, by comparison, in the tourney where he won his 10th bracelet, and the other one where he got 2nd place ... reportedly tipped:
$0.
Also talked with a floorman exec type. He told me that even with Jamie Gold's $1 million tip, the dealers will leave the WSOP having made 30 percent of what they made last year. :cryingcry
"I'm not sure what else I can say," he said. "But those are the real numbers."

I think poker dealers are WAYYYY over paid. And I find it funny that the more a person wins the more they expect to get. I mean wether you win a pot that contains $100 or $10,000 the same amount of work and skill that the dealer needed was the same. How hard is it to deal out cards and pass the chips to the right person. These dealers in vegas are pulling in 100k ! More power to them, but I don't want to hear whining when they get stiffed. They make more than they should already, they shouldn't get greedy.

Beautiful WNO, im sick and tired of dealers bitching about tips like its expected or something. Dealers don't care if you win a pot or if they hand you a bad beat/good beat so why should you care enough about them to make up for the fact there employer pays them peanuts because casino's know players will make up the rest.

having said that , i am actually considering applying for a dealer job on the sun cruz casino boat here in cocoa beach . its 5 minutes from my house.

i played golf last week with a guy who's wife is the general manager.

i wouldnt want to do it full time , but a few 4 hour shifts a week might be fun.

and you can bet your ass i'll be looking for that tip.... LOL....

WNO, good luck.

I will be overly generous this weekend, trust me the IP dealers are not overly paid.

I will hopefully be tipping some of GD's guys over at the sportsbook as well, making the RX proud!!!

That's not completely accurate....everyone who enters the WSOP, much like the Rx poker tournament, pays an upfront fee to a tip fund for the dealers. So as of right now, Jamie tipped zero extra from his $12.8 million prize

Each player has $600 taken out of his entry fee to pay for dealers etc....Thats alot of loot. $600 x 8873 entries. Thats over $5,200,000, the players "tipped" to the house.

When Binion's ran the WSOP, no money was taken out of the players entry fees. All money was put into the prize money.

MOST DEALERS TRAVEL IN TO WORK THE EVENT and pay their own housing, travel and food. (And also have big gambling problems as well, so they don't leave with much)

Here is the deal.

1.5% == $150 PP

From another site:

In all the events (including Super Satellites and Second Chance tournaments) other than the $50,000 HORSE and the Main Event the dealers got 2.25% of the buy-in. For the Main Event we got 1.50%. I'm not sure what we got on the HORSE event it was either 1% or 1.5%.

On the Satellites we were getting $20 per Satellite except that we got $30 for the $1000+ satellites.

In addition tokes from live games and hand in tokes Satellites are all put into the toke pool.

Floor gets no part of the tokes, but the Cashiers/Board Ops/Chip Runners/Time Clerks get 25% of all hand in tokes (this is all tokes in live games, hand ins at satellites, hands ins from tournament winners -- this is a sore spot because many of us did not understand thet would be getting a share of tournament tokes that they are not involved in).

Originally the dealers toke split was based on hours worked. This was terrible as there was a ton of dead time and it drove the toke rate down. This was then changed to being split on a per down basis which has helped a bit but we are still not making what we expected.

Harrah's has continually refused to allow us to appoint a toke committee.

One interesting tid bit is that apparently Rio dealers whose usual base pay was higher than minimum wage, actually had their base wages reduced to the $5.15 /hr we all get.

yeah point is he supposedly promised a 1 million tip...but then tips not a penny due to him getting into an arguement afterward with a woman running the payouts...

It seems most posters always forget their basic economy classes in high school or college. This all comes down to supply/demand. These dealers understand their occupation and need to realize they have a choice. If they are not paid well enough, choose another occupation.

After saying the above, I tip all people in the service industry (outside of dealers) quite well. I will plan on tipping ~$250 just this weekend in Vegas.

IP Housekeeping-$15
Cocktail Waitresses-$100 to $150
Dealers-$20
Cab-$20
Valet/Car Service Guys-$10
Food-$50

FYI--

IN GENERAL the dealers recieve not one penny of an entry fee, unless its a small satellite without a cash prize.
