Sportsbook promises
to pay workers by today

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

BetonSports employees will get their severance pay, the company has promised.

A spokesman for the Ministerio de Trabajo said that inspectors visited the offices of the online sportsbook Friday and were told by a manager that an agreement was reached with employees that they would be paid no later than Thursday.

As many as 2,000 persons lost jobs when the company bowed to a U.S. court order and shut down its gambling operations. These were not only persons who took bets over the telephone or on the computer but maintenance individuals and guards.

please fill us in on exactly what severence pay is in CR. In the USA we get unemployment checks based on how long we have worked and how much we made.

In CR I've heard several things... one was that it is one big check that equals one months pay for every year worked??? I could be way off.

anyway it could add up to be quite the heafty sum

we don't have unemployment checks, you are fired you won't get any $ from the goverment

in this case where the person is being fired for no fault of its own you get paid whatever vacations you have pending (that is, if you worked a year and never took paid vacations you have 2 weeks pay due to you) plus one month for each year worked plus a prorated and mandatory xmas bonus (its normally one month wage so since we are about half way through the end of the year this would be two weeks pay)

with lets say 1000 employees (the figure changes all the time, sometimes it is 800 sometimes it is 1400.......) it is indeed a big amount

thanks for the info... it looks like overall the employees in CR get about the same (maybe more) than unemployment pays in the US.

of course in the US the employers pay into an insurance fund that in turn pays out the unemployed, this way the US employee isn't left holding the bag if the employer dissappers

I hope the BOS kids get their liquidations, but I'd be ASTONISHED if they see any money from those fucks. They've gotten the assets out of BOS ownership so no leins can be filed against their worthless equipment, which Dalton (G's partner) is moving to Panama. There is no BOS money in CR.

Keep us posted Wolfie...

This is the correct information in how to calculate your employee contract termination check: http://www.leylaboral.com/costarica/Prestaciones3CR.aspx

Basically the amount you make mothly, the years laborating, vacations and the cesantia are variables that will affect the size of the check.

What proof do you have of this? None of the books keep much of their money in CR anyways for legal and logistical reasons. Just about every book operating there has only a local account to pay operating expenses. From what I understand this is what the government requires.

Once again though I would love for people to prove the money is gone if they are going to make such assertions. If you don't have proof what good does it do to make such claims? This happens every time there is a problem with a book. If it ends negatively some dweeb comes on and says "told you so" like it makes him a better person than the rest of us. Lets all hope people get most or all of their money out of BOS. It doesn't do any good to make unsubstantiated claims until the full verdict is in.

That's correct in regards to CR goverment requiring the money not to enter CR directly (although in practice just like everything else it does not work that way 100% of the times)

I SUPOSE that being a public company whose statements are audited ........that anyone could check the fillings and see where the bank accounts could be? I mean, the fillings for sure don't have that info but the auditors of the fillings might have it?

One can't be certain that there is no money, I am just surprised they paid the employees so quickly so perhaps the outcome will not be so dark for the players

Its not a question of no money, its how much. They cancelled there KPI reports which I am sure would have shown what kinda of trouble they were in. However they can cover what little July post up they had regardless IMO. By rule they were insolvent and still are. Insolvent is less money on hand than customer deposits. In there case I believe the gap to have gone from a 21 on hand vs 26 in deposits to about 5 million at time of arrest against about 15. Enough to run day to day but not near enough for what they needed for what was coming up. Without heavy reserves they certainly were not going to pay for there basketball advertising on time and maybe not at all. I say this because they had or still have a dividend payment due Sept 6 and still owe another 17 million on the Asian properties come March. I could not determine how many shares they owed on but they had a substansial amount of money due to go out the door by no later than the 30th of this month.

Bottom line is this. Your post up + sevrance they likely have. Beyond that?? You the player has to hope the BoS creditors dont lock you out.
That and BoS better go retain new legal counsel soon or it gets even worse.

I hope I'm 100% wrong, believe me Wildbill. I was wrong when I said that they wouldn't pay the employees, and I hope I put the reverse-whammy on my stiff vibe I'm getting from the BOS situation. One thing though...I have an uncanny instinct for sensing when I'm going to get fucked out of some money, and I'm definately getting that feeling with my BOS umbrella book account. The last thing I want is to be able to say is "I told you so."

You ask what proof I had...well, didn't Dalton buy the equipment and move it to Panama?
